Why Valencia Is a Perfect Base for Overnight Train Trips

Valencia sits at a sweet spot in Spain’s rail network. From here, you can reach historic inland towns, beach destinations, and cultural hubs — often in under three hours and without a car.

With Spain’s €60 monthly transport pass, overnight travel becomes flexible, affordable, and spontaneous — perfect for slow travelers who prefer depth over distance.

1. Xàtiva

Medieval magic casually happening in the Placa de Mercat in Xativa, Spain.

Travel time: ~1 hour

Xàtiva works beautifully as a day trip or an overnight stay. The castle dominates the skyline, but the real magic happens in the evening.

Why stay overnight: On a warm Saturday night, the atmosphere in Plaça del Mercat is pure Spain — families, kids playing, neighbors chatting late into the night. In June you may even get lucky enough to catch groups of musicians from the local university in medieval outfits playing instruments and dancing- it literally made me fall in love with Spain.

2. Cuenca

Cuenca, Spain
Cuenca, Spain

Travel time: ~2.5–3 hours

Famous for its Hanging Houses and dramatic cliffs, Cuenca is compact and atmospheric.

Why stay overnight: Once day-trippers leave, the old town becomes quiet and enchanting.

3. Teruel (with Albarracín Bonus)

Travel time: ~2.5 hours

Teruel is known for Mudéjar architecture and a relaxed pace.

Why stay overnight: Staying overnight allows you to also visit Albarracín, a uniquely preserved medieval town about 30 minutes away by bus — one of Spain’s most beautiful villages. If you want something different, this is it.

4. Guadalest

Travel time: ~3–3.5 hours (train + bus)

A dramatic hilltop village overlooking a turquoise reservoir.

Why stay overnight: Guadalest is stunning early in the morning and after sunset, when crowds thin and the setting feels timeless.

5. Port Saplaya (“The Little Venice of Valencia”)

Travel time: ~30 minutes

A colorful seaside neighborhood with canals, just outside Valencia city.

Why stay overnight: It feels like a getaway without actually leaving the metro area — perfect for a low-effort overnight escape.

6. Peñíscola

Travel time: ~3 hours

A walled old town with flower filled streets with cute shops and restaurants perched above the sea, with beaches on both sides. Cutest Christmas market in Valencia province, making it a great winter destination also.

Why stay overnight: Combining historic atmosphere with beach time makes Peñíscola ideal for families and slow travelers.

7. Alicante

Travel time: ~2–2.5 hours

More than just a day trip, Alicante comes alive in the evenings. Fantastic city, even better beach.

Why stay overnight: Early morning beach walks and sunset views from the castle are best enjoyed without rushing.

8. Requena

Travel time: ~1.5 hours

Valencia's wine region. A cute town with underground cellars and a walkable historic center.

Why stay overnight: Wine tastings and cooler evening temperatures make it perfect for an inland escape.

9. Altea / Calpe / Moraira

Travel time: ~2.5–3 hours

Whitewashed streets, coastal views, and a slower Mediterranean pace. Known as the Santorini of Spain, you can let us know which one is your favorite. Between the Peñón in Calpe, the calas and bougainvillea in Moraira or the greek vibes in Altea, we just can't decide which one we love more. If you can't make it to Ibiza and Mallorca, this is your best mainland alternative.

Why stay overnight: Each town offers a different balance of beach, old town charm, and walkability — all excellent without a car. A year would not be long enough but overnight may have to do. Chef's kiss.

10. Zaragoza

Travel time: ~4 hours

A major historic city with Roman roots and vibrant local life featuring a spectacular castle all along the river.

Why stay overnight: An overnight stay allows time to explore the Basilica del Pilar, river walks, and local neighborhoods without rushing.

Final Thoughts

Valencia is one of Spain’s best bases for car-free travel. With the €60 transport pass, overnight trips become an easy way to explore different regions, test new places, and travel more intentionally.
