Grand Hyatt La Manga Club: The Resort That Makes You Want to Come Back for 35 Years
- 2 days ago
- 9 min read
There is a man we spoke to at the Grand Hyatt La Manga Club who have been returning every single year for 35 years with his family. After our second stay, we completely understand why. This is the kind of place that gets into your rhythm. You stop thinking about whether it is worth it and start thinking about when you are coming back.
This is our honest firsthand review of the Grand Hyatt La Manga Club, written as Hyatt loyalty members who have now stayed twice — once on a free award night and once on points with Grand Club access. We will cover everything: the drive, the check-in, the pool, the breakfast, the hydrotherapy spa, the gym, the sport camps, the points strategy, and what it is actually like to bring young children to a five-star resort in southeast Murcia.
For Families
The Pool: The Reason We Came Back
Let us start here because the pool is a large part of why we wanted to return.
Finding a resort pool that genuinely works for families with very young children is harder than it sounds. Most pools are either too deep everywhere, too shallow everywhere, or have a small wading section that feels like an afterthought. The Grand Hyatt La Manga Club pool is none of those things.
The shallow section is genuinely large — large enough for small children to move freely, splash, play, and build real confidence in the water independently. Our son does not yet really swim and he could enjoy this pool on his own terms. The deep end is properly deep, with a rope separating the two sections clearly, so older and stronger kids have their own space too.
What this setup actually means for parents is something that almost does not exist at other resorts with young children: the ability to sit on the side and relax while your kids play in the water. Normally with children this small, if they are in the pool, we are in the pool. The whole time. Here we could actually sit back, watch them play, and decompress. That is not a small thing after a long drive.
The giant swan floaties are back. The pool bar serves a piña colada worth ordering. There is a rope separating the shallow and deep sections clearly.
Adjacent to the pool is a kids club room for ages 4 to 12. It is a large air-conditioned space with plenty of toys and activities and a toilet right next door. When the kids got too hot they dried off, spent time in the cool room for a while, and headed back to the pool when they were ready. We stayed poolside the whole time — it functions as a perfect break spot that keeps everyone happy. There is adult seating near the room so parents can stay close if they want. For teenagers there is a separate area.
One detail worth knowing: when the weather is cooler, children have a daily window to use the heated indoor pool in the spa. Once the summer heat arrives, starting in May, the spa pool is adults only. Plan accordingly depending on when you visit.
The Sport Camps: Why We Are Already Planning to Return
The Grand Hyatt La Manga Club offers football, tennis, golf, and padel camps for children of families staying at the resort. These are day camps — the whole family stays at the hotel together while children attend coaching sessions during the day. Parents get genuine downtime. Kids get real instruction at world-class facilities. Everyone goes back to the room at the end of the day.
The coaching is serious and the facilities are exceptional. Professional-grade football pitches, tennis academies, golf courses, and padel courts. The minimum stay for the sport camps is five nights. Our children did not participate on this trip and one of ours is not yet old enough, but this is the primary reason we are already planning to return next year when both can take part. If your family travels with sport in mind, this resort was built for you. We have not found anything comparable in Spain.
The football facilities are located just up the hill from the hotel, a short walk away on the opposite side of the road. We only noticed them because we missed a turn on the way in — they are not visible from the main hotel entrance.
The Atmosphere for Families
For a five-star country club resort, the Grand Hyatt La Manga Club is completely unpretentious. The staff are warm and genuinely welcoming. Children are welcome throughout the resort and the environment never feels stiff or unwelcoming for families. We came with two young children, one of whom is still, let us say, in training in terms of sitting completely still for extended periods. We did not feel unwelcome for a single moment.
One couple we spoke to has been returning every year for 35 years. That kind of loyalty does not happen at places that are merely good. It happens at places that become part of your life. Our kids asked multiple times if we could just live there now. All staff speak English and almost all of the guests are British.
For Adults
The Check-In: The One That Changed How We Think About Hotel Arrivals
Both times we arrived at the Grand Hyatt La Manga Club, we were not directed to a counter. We were taken to a beautiful seating area in the lobby, settled onto comfortable couches, and brought two glasses of cava, fruit kebabs, and warm wet napkins to clean our hands after the drive. Our passports were taken to the desk for us. We sat there, drank our cava, watched the kids demolish the fruit, and were checked in without standing in a single line.
Other guests were checking in at the counter in the traditional way. The couch and cava treatment appears to be a loyalty status benefit. If you are a Hyatt member, make sure your status is linked to your reservation.
My husband has said for years that hotel check-in is the worst part of any trip, especially after a long journey with children. This changed his mind entirely.
The Grand Club: Worth It
The Grand Club access pass opens up a significantly different level of stay. There are two levels of club access at this property — we had the Grand Club, which is the higher tier. The benefits include:
Full complimentary hydrotherapy spa access
Daily breakfast buffet
Tapas and cocktail hour every evening from 4 to 6 PM in the club
One complimentary garment pressed per stay
Free digital newspaper access via QR code in the club room
Priority restaurant reservations
The value is substantial, particularly when you factor in that hydrotherapy access alone would otherwise be an additional cost.
The Breakfast Buffet
This is not a hotel breakfast. This is an event.
The dining room has both indoor and outdoor seating, with the outdoor terrace overlooking the golf course and the Mar Menor visible in the distance. A pond runs along the edge of the terrace and the landscaping throughout is spectacular.
Two large fruit display tables with perfectly ripe precut fruit. A dedicated station for making tostadas and bagels with a full array of toppings including smoked salmon, cream cheese with onion and cucumber, capers, and a microgreens station where you harvest your own toppings directly at the table — that bagel stayed in our memory long after the trip. Churros, a chocolate fountain, waffles, pancakes, and cakes alongside the savoury stations. A yogurt section with specialty toppings including a local honey and raisin mixture. Hot options including scrambled eggs, fried eggs with soft centres, sausage, potatoes, and chocolate bread pudding.
At the entrance to the dining room there is a large welcome mimosa display. A cart with coloring books and sweets is set up for children. Waiters come to your table to take drink orders and bring refills so you never have to leave your seat.
We ate there both mornings and did not manage to try everything either time.
The Hydrotherapy Spa: A Session Worth Planning Around
The space is Turkish-Roman in style with a ceiling of twinkle light stars above the main pool area. There are six different types of showers ranging from tropical rainfall to jet blasts. A sauna and steam room. A cold plunge pool. A warm main pool with several distinct sections: standard hot tub jets, lounger positions with underwater bubble jets, and different waterfall features at varying temperatures and pressures. The lockers are gender separate, spacious, and stocked with hair dryers, rosemary-scented lotion, tea, and water.
Sessions are a maximum of three hours and should be booked in advance. In the off season you might be able to walk in but we would recommend calling ahead even to say you are on your way. The first time I went, a staff member met me at the locker room, showed me everything, and then walked me to the entrance of the spa itself so I felt completely oriented and welcome before she left. It was a small gesture that made a real difference.
One practical note that nobody told us in advance: bring a swim cap. It is not a posted rule but it is clearly a European standard and everyone else in the spa had one. Pack one before you go.
I went twice. I would have gone a third time if the schedule allowed.
The Gym
The gym is located within the spa building and is open 24 hours a day. It is clean, quiet, well-equipped, and has a private feel. Free weights, machine weights, a CrossFit and open training section, and cardio machines with screens. Free water and towels provided. I was the only person there for most of my workout.
The Golf Course
The golf courses are immaculate. My husband walked one early in the morning and said the grounds team was out making sure every inch was perfect. The golf cart drivers were notably considerate of people on foot.
The Piano Bar
We did not make it to the piano bar in the evening, which is our one regret from this trip. We walked through it during the day and it is a genuinely beautiful space: a tall skylit ceiling, stylish seating areas, and the kind of ambiance that makes you want to return after dinner. It was the happening spot on our first visit and it is firmly on the list for next time.
Getting There: The Drive from Valencia or Alicante
The Grand Hyatt La Manga Club is one of the most accessible luxury resorts in Spain from the eastern coast.
From the Valencia area the drive is approximately 2.5 to 4 hours depending on where you are starting from. From Alicante it is approximately one hour. From Cartagena it is less than 20 minutes.
The route from Valencia is almost entirely on the AP-7, one of the best-maintained highways in Spain. It runs between the mountains and the sea with beautiful views for much of the journey and is lined with oleander bushes for miles once you enter Murcia. There are frequent rest areas and gas stations throughout. There are three toll booths in each direction. One was marked PASAR SIN PARAR and required no payment. The other two were approximately €2.85 each. All tolls accept contactless payment — we held our phone up to the reader and were through without stopping.
As you approach La Manga and exit toward the resort, the road climbs a hill and the landscaping begins almost immediately. At the second roundabout turn left, pass through the security gate, and the hotel comes into view with a beautiful fountain and immaculate grounds. Parking is free, plentiful, and much of it is shaded.
If you are driving from Valencia or Alicante for the first time, our guide to driving in Spain covers the AP-7, toll payment, documentation to arrange before leaving your home country, and a couple of driving scams worth knowing about.
The Points and Booking Strategy
For Hyatt loyalty members and Chase travel rewards users, the Grand Hyatt La Manga Club offers strong redemption value and is one of the most reliably available Hyatt properties in mainland Spain for points outside of peak summer. The award value here is spectacular relative to the cash rate.
Our first stay we used a free award night. Our second stay we booked two nights at 15,000 points per night, totalling 30,000 points, and added a Grand Club access pass. One important thing to know: Grand Club access cannot be combined with a free award night. We switched our reservation from the award night to points specifically to access the Grand Club, and saved the award night for a separate trip.
For families of four, note that the online booking system only allows reservations for up to three guests. Book for three and then contact the hotel directly to arrange adding your second young child. We have done this both years without any issue.
Practical Information
The Grand Hyatt La Manga Club is in the La Manga del Mar Menor area of Murcia, approximately 2.5 to 4 hours from Valencia depending on your starting point, about one hour from Alicante, and less than 20 minutes from Cartagena.
