The Belen de Arena: Gran Canaria's Christmas Nativity Made Entirely of Sand
Updated: 4 days ago
Gran Canaria was our beach pick in the December roundup of where to go in Spain each month, and it's not just because the weather is the warmest in Europe. It's the Belén de Arena, and it earned more than a passing mention.
Same caveat as always: dates, hours, and event specifics shift year to year. Double check anything time sensitive before you build a trip around it.

The Belén de Arena
Every December, sculptors build a full nativity scene entirely out of sand on Las Canteras beach, on the La Puntilla end, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. This isn't a small sandcastle sized thing. It's billed as Gran Canaria's biggest nativity scene exhibition, life sized figures, real detail, lit up at night, and the 2025-26 edition marked its 20th year running, which tells you this isn't a one-off stunt, it's a genuine local institution at this point.
It typically runs from mid-December through the first week of January, open from 10am to 10pm most days (shorter hours on Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve, and January 5), and it's free and open air, right along the beach promenade, so there's no ticket to plan around.
The Rest of Las Palmas at Christmas
The city doesn't stop at the beach. Recent seasons have brought a genuinely large-scale lighting budget across the city, with a giant illuminated umbrella structure over Plaza de España as the centerpiece, a walk-through illuminated sphere at La Puntilla, several streets strung with light installations and daily light and sound shows, and a wooden stall Christmas market at Plaza de Canarias. Lights and decorations generally stay up well past New Year's, often into late January.
Where to Stay
Staying near Las Canteras beach puts the Belén de Arena, the beachfront promenade, and most of the Christmas lighting within walking distance, and it's the natural base for a December trip built around this specific list.

Part of Our December Guide
This post is part of our complete guide to Where to Go in Spain in December — six different picks for six types of traveller.
What to Wear in Gran Canaria in December
Gran Canaria in December sits around 22°C during the day -- which means you will almost certainly overdress on arrival. The light is Mediterranean and the air is warm. But there's a catch: evenings cool down to 16°C, and the island breeze off the Atlantic can feel properly cold if you're sitting outside.
Daytime: a t-shirt or light linen shirt works perfectly. Swimsuit for the beach. Sun protection is still serious business in the Canaries even in December -- the UV index is higher than you'd expect at this latitude.
Evenings in Las Palmas: this is where the scarf earns its place. You'll see locals in light scarves and jackets at 18°C -- it's a Spanish thing, and it's not wrong. A light blazer or linen jacket for dinner keeps you comfortable and fits in with the local vibe. Nobody's in ski gear, but nobody's in a vest either.
For the Belén de Arena: it's outdoors on the beach, open until 10pm. Bring a light layer for the evening visit -- the sea breeze at night is real. Comfortable walking shoes for the sand and promenade.
Practical Tips and Costs
The Belén de Arena: free to visit. Runs from mid-December through early January, 10am-10pm most days. Located on the La Puntilla end of Las Canteras beach in Las Palmas. Easy to combine with a walk along the promenade and dinner in the Vegueta old town.
Flights: Gran Canaria Airport (LPA) is one of the best-connected airports in Spain, with direct flights from the UK, Germany, Scandinavia, and mainland Spain. December flights are in demand -- book 6-8 weeks out for holiday week travel.
Accommodation: Las Palmas city runs €60-110/night for mid-range hotels near Las Canteras. The south coast resorts (Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés) are the package-holiday end of the market -- fine for families, busier but more amenities. Book holiday week well in advance.
Food costs: Las Palmas is genuinely good value. Lunch menú del día runs €10-14. Fresh fish restaurants near the port and in the Vegueta neighborhood offer excellent quality at reasonable prices. December is peak season so popular restaurants fill up -- reserve ahead for Christmas Eve dinner.
