Wildlife in Spain by Region: The Complete Guide to Wild Animals, Birds, and Marine Life

Spain has some of the most extraordinary wildlife in Europe, and most visitors have no idea. Brown bears in the mountain forests of Asturias. Wild wolves in Zamora. The Green North

The Cantabrian mountains and the forests of the northwest hold Spain's largest wild mammals.

🐻 Brown bears — The Cantabrian brown bear has made a remarkable comeback. Somiedo Natural Park in Asturias holds the densest population, with late summer the best window for sightings. Book an excursion here.

🐺 Iberian wolves — The Sierra de la Culebra in Zamora has the highest wolf density in the EU. September and October bring the added spectacle of the red deer rut in the same landscape.

🐎 Wild horses (Rapa das Bestas) — Thousands of wild Galician mountain horses roam the hills of Pontevedra. Every first weekend of July, the villages round them up by hand in one of Europe's most ancient and spectacular festivals.

Central Spain and the Mountains

The high mountain ranges of central Spain, from the Sierra de Gredos to the Pyrenees, are home to iconic large animals and some of the most spectacular birds of prey on the continent.

🐐 Iberian ibex — The best wildlife experience in Spain for families, because a sighting is almost guaranteed. Gredos holds 5,000–8,000 of the largest subspecies. Sierra Nevada has 14,000.

🦅 Vultures: bearded, griffon, and Egyptian — Monfragüe in Extremadura is arguably Europe's best vulture viewpoint. The Pyrenees hold the continent's most significant bearded vulture population. Book a guided tour.

🥩 Cranes at Gallocanta — Up to 135,000 common cranes funnel through this Aragón lagoon in October–November and again in February. One of the great wildlife spectacles of Europe, almost unknown outside the birding world.

Andalucía

Andalucía has more wildlife variety than any other region in Spain, from the rarest cat in the world to wild primates to chameleons.

🐆 Iberian lynx — The rarest cat in the world, in the Sierra de Andújar in Jaén. Winter is the best time, and you can try it yourself without a tour. Guided tour in Huelva.

🦎 Chameleons and lizards — The only wild chameleons in Europe live on the Málaga coast in the Axarquía. Geckos and ocellated lizards are easy finds almost anywhere warm.

🐒 Barbary macaques — The only wild monkeys in Europe live on the Rock of Gibraltar. Easy day trip from the Costa del Sol.

🦅 Colorful birds — Hoopoes, bee-eaters, and rollers are among the most beautiful birds in Europe and common across Andalucía in spring and summer.

🐳 Whale watching in Tarifa — orcas hunting tuna in the Strait of Gibraltar, mid-July to mid-September.

The Mediterranean Coast

The Mediterranean is not just beaches. The waters hold some of Europe's most important cetacean migration routes.
