Where to Stay in Extremadura: The Best Hotels for Monfragüe, Cáceres and the Dehesa
Extremadura is the Spain most visitors never see, and autumn is when it shines. From October the Montanera begins, when Iberian pigs roam the oak dehesa fattening on acorns, Monfragüe's vultures and eagles fill the sky, and the old towns of Cáceres and Trujillo are quiet and golden.
The region is big, so pick your base by what you came for. Stay at Monfragüe for wildlife and dehesa landscapes. Stay in Cáceres or Trujillo for history, food and evenings out. The two are about an hour apart, and many people split the trip.
Here are the best places to stay in Extremadura, chosen for different travelers and different priorities.
Best Location and Best Value: Hotel Rural Puerta de Monfragüe
For wildlife, location is everything, and this 20-room rural hotel in Toril is about a five-minute walk from the Portillo del Tiétar viewpoint, one of the best spots in Monfragüe for vultures, black storks and, with luck, eagle owls.
It's quiet, simple and good value, with a restaurant on site, so you can be at the viewpoint at first light and back for breakfast.

Best for Families: Hospedería de Monfragüe
The Hospedería de Monfragüe in Torrejón el Rubio, at the edge of the park, is the most complete hotel near Monfragüe: 60 rooms, large gardens, a pool, a spa, a gym, a paddle court and a restaurant.
For families, that means space and things to do between wildlife outings. The Salto del Gitano viewpoint, where griffon vultures nest on the cliffs above the river, is a short drive away.
Luxury: Atrio, Cáceres
Atrio is one of Spain's great restaurant hotels, set inside the medieval walled old town of Cáceres. Its Michelin-starred restaurant and its wine cellar, one of the most famous in Europe, draw food lovers from all over the world.
Stay here for a food-focused trip and spend your days walking the UNESCO old town, which at night, lit up and almost empty, feels like a film set. If you prefer something historic but less formal, the Parador de Trujillo, in a 16th-century convent, is the classic alternative.
Most Unique: Palacio Viejo de las Corchuelas
This old country house sits on a 600-hectare estate in the dehesa near Torrejón el Rubio, right next to Monfragüe. It has just six double rooms, and the kitchen focuses on organic, home-style cooking, including picnic menus for your days out.
If you came for the Montanera, this is the stay. You're sleeping inside the oak-and-pasture landscape where the Iberian pigs feed on acorns, with Monfragüe's raptors overhead.
