Imperial Eagles, Black Vultures and Raptors in Spain: Where to See Europe's Most Impressive Birds of Prey
Updated: 4 days ago
If you care about birds of prey, Spain is where you want to be. No country in Europe has a more impressive raptor scene. The Spanish imperial eagle is found nowhere else on earth — a critically recovering species you can reliably see in the wild. The black vulture has its largest European population here. The bearded vulture (quebrantahuesos) is staging a comeback in the Pyrenees. Four species of vulture, multiple eagle species, harriers, kites, and falcons — Spain does raptors like nowhere else.

Spanish Imperial Eagle — The One People Come For
The Spanish imperial eagle (Aquila adalberti) is one of the rarest raptors in the world, and it exists only in Spain and a tiny corner of Portugal. In the 1960s the population had fallen to around 30 pairs. Today, thanks to intensive conservation, there are over 800 individuals — still endangered, but visible to anyone who goes to the right place. The best places: Doñana National Park (Huelva), Monfragüe National Park (Extremadura), and the Guadiana valley in Extremadura. Adults are unmistakable — dark brown with striking white shoulder patches. Best months are February through June when birds are at nest sites.
Black Vulture — Europe's Largest Bird of Prey
The black vulture (Aegypius monachus) is a massive bird — wingspan up to 3 metres, weight up to 14kg. Spain has around 2,500 pairs, representing over 90% of the European population. They nest colonially in large trees. Best places: Monfragüe (the castle viewpoint looks directly onto nesting trees), Sierra Morena, and Extremadura generally. Watching a thermal fill up with black vultures on a warm morning is one of Spain's great natural spectacles.
Bearded Vulture — The Bone Dropper
The quebrantahuesos drops bones from height onto rocks to crack them and eat the marrow — the only bird in the world that does this. We have a full guide to all four Spanish vulture species including the bearded vulture.Read the full vulture guide.
Golden Eagle
Golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) are widespread across Spain's mountain ranges and are the raptor most likely to be seen anywhere in the country with rocky terrain. Sierra de Gredos, Picos de Europa, the Pyrenees, and the Sierras of Andalucía all have good populations. They're year-round residents.
Red and Black Kites
Spain is the world stronghold for both. Red kites winter in enormous numbers in Extremadura and Castile, where communal roosts of thousands of birds are a mid-winter spectacle. Black kites are summer visitors, common around lakes, reservoirs, and wetlands across the country from March to September.
Where to Go for the Best Raptor Watching in Spain
Monfragüe National Park, Extremadura — black vultures, imperial eagles, black storks, griffon vultures from one viewpoint. Spain's single best raptor destination.
Doñana National Park, Huelva — imperial eagles, marsh harriers, booted eagles, black kites alongside flamingos and wetland species
Sierra de Gredos, Ávila — golden eagles, Spanish ibex, red kites, short-toed eagle
Ordesa and Monte Perdido, Pyrenees — bearded vulture, golden eagle, lammergeier
Bardenas Reales, Navarra — short-toed eagle, Montagu's harrier, lesser kestrel in the semi-desert landscape
Practical Tips
Monfragüe is the most efficient single destination — park at the castle and watch without walking
Morning thermals bring vultures up early — be there by 9am
Imperial eagles are easiest to find in spring near nest sites; guided tours significantly increase success rates
Bring a scope if you have one; good binoculars are essential
