Where to Stay in Sierra de Andújar: The Best Bases for Seeing a Wild Iberian Lynx
Sierra de Andújar is the best place on Earth to see a wild Iberian lynx, and January is peak season. It's mating time, the cats are more active and more vocal, and lynx watchers line the viewpoints above the Jándula reservoir from first light.
Where you stay matters more here than almost anywhere. The best sightings happen at dawn and dusk, so you want to be close to the park road, not an hour away. You have two real choices: stay in the town of Andújar, roughly half an hour or more from the main viewing areas, or stay inside the natural park itself.
Sierra de Andújar is a wild place, not a resort, so there's no luxury hotel and the options are small. Here are the best, chosen for different travelers and different priorities.
Best Location and Best Value: Complejo La Mirada
Complejo La Mirada sits inside the natural park at kilometer 9 of the road to the Santuario de la Virgen de la Cabeza, the same road lynx watchers use every morning. It's a simple 1-star hotel with a restaurant, a pool and wooden cabins, and its rates are as low as the location is good.
Being inside the park means you can be at the viewpoints before sunrise without a long drive in the dark. Rooms are basic, but on a lynx trip you'll mostly use them for sleeping.

Luxury and Best for Families: Hotel Oleum
Hotel Oleum is the most polished stay in the area: a boutique hotel in a 1924 mansion in the historic centre of Andújar, with 16 rooms around an inner courtyard, artwork throughout, a restaurant and a sunny terrace.
It's also the best fit for families. Junior suites and two-level superior rooms sleep up to four, children are welcome, and staying in town means restaurants, shops and an easy evening when the kids are done with wildlife spotting. Parking is offsite nearby for a small daily fee.
Most Unique: Villa Matilde
Villa Matilde is a 1926 country mansion on the edge of the natural park, with 10 simple, atmospheric rooms, a pool overlooking forested hills and home-cooked meals made with organic, home-grown produce. The hosts speak fluent English.
Best of all, the villa sits within the territory of a female lynx, so you're sleeping in the cats' own neighborhood. There's no air conditioning, which is no problem in January but worth knowing for a summer visit.
