What to Do in Jaén: The Best Activities in Spain's Olive Oil Capital

Jaén province contains more olive trees than anywhere else on earth — about 66 million of them — and produces more olive oil than Greece, Italy, or any other country outside Spain. That's not a tourist board fact; it's genuinely staggering when you see the hills from the road and realise what you're looking at stretches for hundreds of kilometres.

October is when the harvest begins and the mills open for visits, but the province rewards visitors year-round. The Renaissance cities of Úbeda and Baeza, the castle at Jaén, and the vast Cazorla Natural Park are all there in any month.

Best for First-Timers: Guided Olive Mill Tour & EVOO Tasting

The olive oil tour at Jaén city is one of the most straightforward agricultural tourism experiences in Spain — guided walk through a working mill, explanation of the cold-press extraction process, and a proper tasting of extra virgin olive oil with bread. Tasting a fresh-pressed single-estate oil from this province in October or November, when the mills are running at full production, is one of those experiences that recalibrates what you thought you knew about a food you use every day. Tours run year-round, with October through December as peak season.

Best for Families & Kids: Úbeda & Baeza Renaissance Cities Day Trip

Úbeda and Baeza are two UNESCO World Heritage cities about 60 kilometres from Jaén — both built almost entirely in 16th-century Spanish Renaissance style, both remarkably intact, both almost entirely free of mass tourism. Úbeda has a plaza that several architectural historians rank among the finest in Spain. Baeza has a cathedral, a university, and streets that look like a film set. A guided day trip covers both. Good for families: the cities are compact, the scale works with younger attention spans, and the stories of the Reconquista and Spanish Renaissance are accessible without being dumbed down.

Best if You Only Have a Few Hours: Jaén Castle Guided Tour

The Castillo de Santa Catalina sits on a rocky ridge above Jaén city with views across the olive groves stretching to the horizon. One of the most dramatically positioned castles in Andalucía — and now houses a Parador hotel inside the original Moorish and Christian fortress walls. A guided tour covers the military history of the site, the Moorish occupation, the Christian reconquest, and views that explain why this ridge was worth fighting over for centuries.

Most Unique: Cazorla Natural Park 4x4 Wildlife Tour

The Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park is the largest protected area in Spain — 210,000 hectares home to Spanish ibex, red deer (October is the rut, when the stags bellow through the valleys), golden eagles, otters, and wild boar. Almost entirely unknown outside Spain. 4x4 guided tours run through the park's interior tracks that aren't accessible by normal vehicle. In October, the red deer rut makes the park particularly atmospheric.

Best Guided Experience: Olive Harvest Experience at a Working Plantation

The Aires de Jaén tour is the one to book if you want to understand olive oil production from tree to bottle. It's based at a working plantation outside the city, run by a family that's been growing olives here for generations. The tour includes the plantation walk, the mill visit, and a proper meal made with their oil. Harvest season (October–December) is the right time if you want to see the pickers and mill in action. Off-season focuses more on cultivation and the ecology of the grove.

Looking for Somewhere to Stay?

Jaén city is the practical hub, with the castle Parador as the obvious splurge. Úbeda and Baeza are worth an overnight — both have excellent boutique hotels in historic palaces. Browse hotels in Jaén →
