Skip the built-up Costa del Sol this month for the wilder Atlantic side. Bolonia, near Tarifa, has one of Andalucía's most beautiful beaches (backed by a massive sand dune) and right behind it sits Baelo Claudia, a remarkably intact Roman city with its amphitheater, forum, and the remains of an ancient fish-salting industry still visible in the ruins. Spend the morning walking through 2,000-year-old streets, then spend the afternoon on the sand next to them. While you're in the area, it's also worth a stop across the water: the wild Barbary macaques of Gibraltar are Europe's only wild monkey population, and they're right there.

By October the crowds are gone. If the wind hasn't started yet, the weather is excellent, we were still swimming in the sea every day after school last October. The flowers are all still in bloom. Basically, you get all the good things about the Mediterranean coast without the crowds or the extreme heat. It's so lovely.
