Where to Stay in the Sierra de Cazorla in January: The Best Hotels for Mountains, Wildlife and Olive Country

4 min read

The Sierra de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas is the largest protected natural area in Spain, and January is one of its best months. The forests are quiet, the air is crisp, ibex and deer are easy to spot on the lower slopes, and the olive harvest is still running in the valleys below.

Most visitors base themselves in the town of Cazorla, a white town under its castle with good restaurants and the main roads into the park. Stay in town for convenience and evenings out, or in the hills for views and quiet. In winter, town is the smarter base: some park roads are slow in bad weather, and very rural places can feel empty.

Here are the best places to stay in the Sierra de Cazorla in January, chosen for different travelers and different priorities.

Best Location: Hotel Ciudad de Cazorla

Hotel Ciudad de Cazorla sits on the Plaza de la Corredera, the main square in town, so restaurants, bars and shops are steps from the door. It's the easiest base for first-timers who want to drive into the park by day and walk to dinner at night.

Parking in the centre is tight, so ask the hotel about options when you book.

Best Value: Hotel Guadalquivir

This small, family-run hotel near Plaza de Andalucía is one of the best-reviewed places in Cazorla: clean, central, friendly and priced well below the bigger hotels.

Rooms are simple, but you're right in town, and in January you'll spend your days out in the sierra anyway.

Best for Families: Villa Turística de Cazorla

Families do best with space, and the Villa Turística gives you exactly that: self-contained villas with two bedrooms and two bathrooms, set in grounds with views over the valley.

A kitchen and a living room make a mountain trip with kids much easier, especially on a cold January evening when everyone is tired after a day of walking.

Luxury: Hotel & Spa Sierra de Cazorla

In La Iruela, just above Cazorla, this 4-star hotel is the most complete in the area, with a spa that makes the perfect end to a day on the trails and views up to La Iruela's castle and the mountains.

It isn't grand luxury, which the Sierra de Cazorla doesn't really do, but it's the most comfortable stay near the park and only a few minutes' drive from town.

Most Unique: Molino La Farraga

Molino La Farraga is an old mill house beside the river, tucked below the castle a short walk from the town square. It's small, atmospheric and full of character, with breakfast included and the sound of water outside your window.

If you'd rather wake up inside the park, the Parador de Cazorla sits deep in the sierra with views over the forest. Check its winter opening dates before planning around it, as mountain hotels in the park sometimes close for part of the season.
