Where to See the Iberian Ibex in Spain: The Wild Mountain Goat Most Visitors Never Notice

The Iberian ibex, the cabra montés, is one of the most spectacular animals in Spain and one of the easiest to actually see. A wild mountain goat with enormous curved horns, weighing up to 120 kilograms in the largest males, it lives on the rocky crags and mountain slopes across Andalucía and central Spain. Unlike wolves or lynx, where a sighting requires early starts, patience, and a fair amount of luck, ibex are gregarious, active in daylight, and not especially afraid of people. On the right trails you will almost certainly find them.

Sierra de Gredos, Ávila. This is the classic ibex location in Spain. The Gredos range in western Ávila, in Castilla y León, holds between 5,000 and 8,000 Gredos ibex, the largest subspecies, with the most impressive horns of all four Spanish ibex varieties. They were nearly hunted to extinction a century ago. Today they are thriving. The Circo de Gredos is where serious watchers head.

Sierra Nevada, Granada. The Sierra Nevada holds close to 14,000 ibex, the largest single population in Andalucía. It sits less than 40 kilometres from the coast, which makes it an extraordinary pairing with a day at the beach on the Costa Tropical or a visit to the Alhambra in Granada province. We are in the Costa Tropical now and we just saw one while out walking yesterday! It did not have large horns but it was an exciting sighting :)

The Sierra de Grazalema in Cádiz, the Serranía de Ronda in Málaga, and the Parque Natural de las Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama on the Costa Tropical all hold strong ibex populations. If you are based anywhere on the Costa del Sol or the Costa Tropical, ibex are within easy reach.

When to go

Ibex can be seen year-round, but there are two highlights. In November and December, the males compete furiously for females during the rut, charging each other with a crack of horns that carries across the mountain. Spring, when the young are born and the herds move to lower elevations, is the other excellent window. In summer they climb to the high crags to escape the heat, so mornings are essential.

How to find them

Gredos pairs with the extraordinary walled city of Ávila and the wider landscapes of Castilla y León. Sierra Nevada pairs with the Alhambra, the Alpujarras villages, and the Costa Tropical just below — one of the most remarkable altitude ranges in Europe, from snowfields to subtropical coast in under an hour.

This is probably the best wildlife experience in Spain for young children precisely because a sighting is so likely. Spotting a herd of wild mountain goats on the cliffs above a trail, watching the males with their enormous horns, is genuinely exciting and requires no special equipment or patience. It works as part of any hiking or sightseeing day in the mountains.
