Where to Stay Near the Cañón del Río Lobos in March: The Best Hotels for Wildlife Lovers
The Cañón del Río Lobos is our March pick for Animal & Wildlife Lovers. This limestone canyon in Soria runs for around 25 kilometers, griffon vultures nest on its crags along with eagles, kestrels and peregrine falcons, and the Templar-linked chapel of San Bartolomé sits at the bottom of the gorge. In March the birds are active and the paths are quiet.
This is the heart of Spain's emptied interior, so don't expect big hotels. The gateways are the village of Ucero, home to the park's visitor center, and the beautiful cathedral town of El Burgo de Osma, about 16 kilometers away. Both have small, characterful places to stay, and prices are some of the lowest in this series.
Here are the best places to stay near the Cañón del Río Lobos, chosen for different travelers and different priorities.
Best Location: Posada Los Templarios, Ucero
Ucero is the village at the canyon's door, and Posada Los Templarios puts you right there. It's a 4-star Posada Real, part of Castilla y León's network of distinctive rural inns, in a fully restored 17th-century stone house that once belonged to the village priest.
With just 12 rooms, a large lounge, a terrace, a restaurant and a bar, it's small and personal. For wildlife watchers, being this close means you can be on the trails at first light, when the vultures lift off the cliffs, without a drive in the dark.

Best Value: Hotel II Virrey Palafox, El Burgo de Osma
This is the kind of value that only rural Spain still offers. Hotel II Virrey Palafox is a 4-star hotel at the start of El Burgo de Osma's main street, a few steps from the Plaza Mayor and the cathedral, with 52 individually decorated rooms. Doubles start around €50 a night and family rooms with two connected spaces from around €80.
Its restaurant is the other reason to stay: it mixes traditional Soria cooking with modern techniques and has picked up national and international recognition. El Burgo de Osma is also famous for its roast suckling lamb and its winter pig-slaughter feasts, so come hungry.
Best for Families: Hotel SPA Río Ucero, El Burgo de Osma
Hotel SPA Río Ucero is a 3-star beside the Ucero river, a short walk from El Burgo de Osma's historic center, with some rooms looking toward the cathedral. It offers triple and family rooms, with family rooms around €124 a night including breakfast.
The 300-square-meter spa, with a heated pool, jacuzzi and water features, is a lifesaver on a chilly March afternoon after a morning in the canyon. There's a restaurant, a café with a terrace and free parking, and the park is about 16 kilometers away.
Luxury and Most Unique: Castilla Termal Burgo de Osma
This is one of the most remarkable hotels in Castilla y León. Castilla Termal Burgo de Osma occupies the 16th-century University of Santa Catalina, a place of learning for nearly 300 years, now a 70-room hotel with exposed stone walls and wooden beams, and a glass-roofed central courtyard framed by two levels of arches.
The highlight is underground: a dramatically lit spa with thermal pools fed by a nearby spring. Some suites have fireplaces and soaking tubs. After a cold morning watching vultures over the canyon, sinking into warm water under a 500-year-old university is a very good way to spend the afternoon.
