Where to Stay in Burgos in February (First-Timer's Guide): The Best Hotels for the Cathedral and Atapuerca

3 min read

Burgos is our February pick for Worldschoolers & Families, and it's one of the best history lessons in Europe. The city has one of the finest Gothic cathedrals anywhere, and just outside town, the Atapuerca sites and the Museum of Human Evolution tell the story of 1.2 million years of human history.

Burgos is compact and walkable, and in February it's cold, so the historic centre around the cathedral is the best base: everything is close, and you can duck into a bar for morcilla and hot drinks. The Atapuerca sites are about 15 kilometers away, and the Museum of Human Evolution is in the city itself.

Here are the best places to stay in Burgos, chosen for different travelers and different priorities.

Best Location: Hotel Mesón del Cid

Mesón del Cid is a Burgos classic, a 3-star hotel in the historic centre directly facing the cathedral. Some rooms look straight out at the Gothic spires, and the hotel has its own parking, a rare thing in the old town.

For a first visit, waking up to that view is the whole point.

Best Value: Entrearcos Hotel

Entrearcos is a budget hotel in the historic centre with a very good location, close to the cathedral and the tapas streets.

Rooms are simple, but you're paying for the address, and in Burgos you'll spend most of your time out anyway.

Best for Families: ABBA Burgos Hotel

ABBA Burgos is about 15 minutes from the centre and has the one thing kids want after a cold day of sightseeing: a heated pool. It also has a good restaurant and easy parking.

Being on the edge of the city also makes it quicker to drive out to Atapuerca for the archaeological site tours.

Luxury: NH Collection Palacio de Burgos

NH Collection Palacio de Burgos is set in a former convent with cloisters, by the river and about 200 meters from the cathedral. It combines historic architecture with modern rooms and a good breakfast.

It's the most elegant stay in the city and close to everything.

Most Unique: La Morada del Cid, Vivar del Cid

Vivar del Cid, about 10 minutes from Burgos, is the village where El Cid, Spain's legendary medieval knight, was born. La Morada del Cid is a friendly rural hotel decorated with sketches from his story, with a breakfast that guests rave about.

For kids who've just seen El Cid's tomb in the cathedral, sleeping in his home village makes the history real.
