Where to Stay in Málaga in January (First-Timer's Guide): City, Beach and the Costa del Sol

4 min read

Málaga in January is the Spain that surprises people. While most of Europe is grey, the Costa del Sol usually sees daytime highs around 17°C (63°F), long sunny stretches and a city that keeps living outdoors. It's not swimming weather for most people, but it's perfect for walks along the sea, long lunches on a terrace and museums without the summer crowds.

Where you stay sets the tone. The historic centre puts the cathedral, the Picasso Museum and the tapas bars at your door. The Malagueta and La Caleta put you on the seafront promenade, a 10 to 20 minute walk from the old town. Head west to Torremolinos or Benalmádena and you trade city life for bigger family resorts and lower rates.

If it's your first time, start in the city. Málaga is the easiest base on the coast, with the airport about 15 minutes away by local train. Here are the best places to stay in Málaga and on the Costa del Sol in January, chosen for different travelers and different priorities.

Best Location: Hotel Molina Lario

For a first visit, you want to walk everywhere, and Molina Lario makes that easy. It sits right across from the cathedral, a few minutes from Calle Larios, the Picasso Museum and the port, so the whole historic centre is on foot.

The rooftop is the reason people come back: a pool and bar with views over the cathedral and out to the sea. The pool is a summer thing, but the terrace works on a sunny January afternoon, and in Málaga that's most afternoons.

Best Value: Room Mate Valeria

Room Mate Valeria sits by the port at the start of the Malagueta, so you have the beach promenade on one side and the old town about 15 minutes' walk on the other. Rooms are bright and modern, many with sea views, and rates usually come in below the big names in the centre.

January is low season on the Costa del Sol, which makes this the cheapest time of year for a sea-view room here. It's a smart pick if you want the city and the sea without paying beachfront-luxury prices.

Best for Families: Holiday World Polynesia, Benalmádena

If you're traveling with kids, look west of the city. Holiday World Polynesia in Benalmádena is built around families, with slide zones, a beach-club-style water area and spacious rooms that suit kids from toddlers to early teens.

One honest note for January: the outdoor water areas are a warm-weather feature, so check what's open for your dates before you book. Even so, Benalmádena works well in winter, with Selwo Marina, the Sea Life aquarium and the marina close by, and Málaga about half an hour away by train or car.

Luxury: Gran Hotel Miramar

Gran Hotel Miramar is Málaga's grand dame, a 5-star palace hotel on the seafront between the Malagueta and La Caleta. It first opened in the 1920s as one of the great hotels of the Spanish coast, and today it has a spa, a large pool in its gardens and several restaurants.

The old town is a 15 to 20 minute walk along the sea, which in January is a pleasure rather than a chore. For a winter escape where the spa, a long lunch and a stroll on the promenade are the whole plan, this is the hotel.

Most Unique: Parador de Málaga Gibralfaro

The Parador sits on Gibralfaro hill, right beside the castle walls, looking down over the city, the port and the bullring. The views from its terrace and rooftop pool area are the best of any hotel in Málaga.

The trade-off is the hill. You're a steep walk or a short taxi from the centre, so it suits travelers who want quiet nights and a view to come home to. Watching the sun go down over the bay from up here on a clear January evening is worth it.
