Where to Stay in Sierra Nevada in January: The Best Ski Hotels in Pradollano (and One in the Alhambra)

4 min read

Sierra Nevada is Europe's southernmost ski resort and our My Pick for January. You can ski in the morning, be in Granada for tapas by evening and stand on a Mediterranean beach the next day. January brings some of the most reliable snow of the season and, outside the holiday weeks, quieter slopes.

Nearly all the slopeside hotels are in Pradollano, the resort village at around 2,100 meters, and almost everything there is a short walk from the lifts. The alternative is to stay in Granada, roughly 45 minutes' drive below, and go up each day by car or bus. Stay in Pradollano for skiing, and Granada for everything else.

Here are the best places to stay in Sierra Nevada in January, chosen for different travelers and different priorities.

Best Location: Hotel GHM Monachil

GHM Monachil is a 3-star hotel right at the foot of the slopes, about 60 meters from the Parador chairlift, so you can step out of the door in your boots and be skiing in minutes.

Rooms include quadruple options, which helps groups and families, and the price is fair for a hotel this close to the lifts.

Best Value: Hotel Montblanc

Hotel Montblanc is a simple 3-star in Pradollano with rooms for up to four, which is where the value comes from: split a quadruple between a family or a group of friends and the cost per person drops fast.

It's no-frills, but in a ski resort what matters is a warm room, a good breakfast and a short walk to the lifts, and that's what you get.

Best for Families: Meliá Sol y Nieve

Meliá Sol y Nieve is about 100 meters from the lifts and has the best kids' setup in the resort: a Mini Club for ages 5 to 10 and a Teens Club for ages 10 to 16, plus a spa for the parents.

That combination is what makes a family ski week work. The kids are happy, the parents get a couple of hours to themselves, and nobody has to walk far in ski boots.

Luxury: El Lodge Ski & Spa

El Lodge is the most exclusive hotel on the mountain, a true ski-in ski-out alpine lodge with a heated indoor pool, a spa and the only ski-in ski-out après-ski terrace in Sierra Nevada. It comes from the same owners as Marbella's Puente Romano.

Families are looked after too, with a games room for children and childcare available. For a once-a-year ski splurge in Spain, this is the one to book.

Most Unique: Parador de Granada

For something completely different, stay inside the Alhambra. The Parador de Granada occupies a former Franciscan convent within the Alhambra grounds, and it's one of the most sought-after hotel rooms in Spain.

It's roughly 45 minutes' drive from the slopes, so it works best if you're splitting your trip between skiing and Granada. Book months ahead, because rooms are limited and go quickly.
