What to Do in the Sierra Nevada: Skiing, Snowshoeing & Granada's Mountain Backyard
Updated: 4 days ago
The Sierra Nevada sits above Granada — the highest mountain range in continental Spain, with two peaks above 3,400 metres and a ski resort that runs from late November through April on snow that comes from the same Mediterranean weather systems that make Andalucía warm in winter. The combination of skiing at altitude and the Alhambra 45 minutes below is unusual enough that it's worth saying plainly: you can ski in the morning and visit a Nasrid palace in the afternoon. Not many places in the world offer that.
January is peak ski season and the most reliable snow month. But the Sierra Nevada earns a visit year-round — hiking from May through October, the Los Cahorros gorge any time, the Alpujarras villages all year. Here's what to book.

Best for First-Timers: Ski Lesson with Equipment at the Sierra Nevada Resort
The Sierra Nevada ski resort has 110 kilometres of marked runs across 124 pistes — the largest ski area in southern Europe. The ski school runs group and private lessons in English for all levels from complete beginner upward. January gives you the best snow conditions of the season: the base depth is at maximum, the mountain is fully open, and the combination of Andalucían sunshine and alpine snow that makes this resort distinctive is at its most reliable.
The drive from Granada to the resort takes about 45 minutes. Ski hire and lift passes are bookable online and significantly cheaper than booking at the resort on the day. The beginner area (Pradollano) is well-designed and separate from the main runs. Full kit — skis, boots, helmet, poles — included in the lesson package.

Best for Families & Kids: Los Cahorros de Monachil Gorge Hike
Los Cahorros is a limestone gorge 20 minutes from Granada by car — hanging bridges over a river, waterfalls, swimming holes (May through September), and a trail that goes through the rock rather than over it. It's one of the most popular hikes in the Sierra Nevada and genuinely accessible for families with children from about 7 upward.
In January the gorge is quiet, the river is full from winter rain, and the waterfalls are at their most impressive. The hanging bridges and the sections where the trail goes through narrow clefts in the rock work on children regardless of season. A guided tour adds the geology of the karst landscape and the wildlife (short-toed eagle, peregrine falcon nest in the cliffs). No swimming in January but the gorge itself is excellent.

Best if You Only Have a Few Hours: Sierra Nevada Snowshoe Tour
The snowshoe tour is the entry point to the Sierra Nevada in winter for anyone who doesn't ski — a guided two to three hour walk through the snow above the resort, with equipment provided, at an altitude where the views cover the full arc of Andalucía and on clear days extend to the Atlas Mountains in Morocco and the Strait of Gibraltar. No prior snow experience needed. The guides adapt the route to the group and snow conditions.
January snowshoe conditions are typically the best of the season. The combination of clear Andalucían winter days at altitude (3,000+ metres) and the view over the coast 50 kilometres away is one of those experiences that makes the Sierra Nevada specifically unusual rather than just generically alpine.

Most Unique: Tandem Paragliding over the Sierra Nevada
Paragliding over the Sierra Nevada is a specific thing: you launch from the mountain at altitude, fly over the snow-covered peaks, and the thermal activity over the warm Andalucían plains below creates long, sustained glide paths that make this one of the better paragliding locations in Spain. Tandem flights with a certified instructor run year-round — in January you get the snow below you and the Alhambra visible in the city below.
Two to three hours total including the drive to the launch point, the flight (20–40 minutes depending on conditions), and the return. No experience required. The height above the city and the combination of snow and Mediterranean coast in the same view is hard to replicate elsewhere.

Best Guided Experience: Full-Day Sierra Nevada with Alhambra Combination
The day trip from Granada that combines the sierra in the morning and the Alhambra in the afternoon is the one that takes full advantage of the geography. The guided Sierra Nevada day trip runs about 7 hours — Gonzalo (the guide most reviews name, consistently excellent with families) covers the national park, the off-road section, local flora and fauna, and the ski resort area in a small group of maximum 8.
Book the Alhambra separately for the afternoon. Alhambra tickets sell out weeks in advance and January is no exception — book both at the same time when you plan the trip. The combination covers 800 years of Andalucían history and 3,400 metres of vertical relief in one day. That's a good day.
