Where to Stay for Fuente de Piedra: The Best Hotels in Antequera for Flamingo Season
Fuente de Piedra is home to the largest flamingo colony on the Iberian Peninsula, and from late winter the lagoon turns pink as thousands of birds arrive to breed. It's our February pick for Animal & Wildlife Lovers, and it's one of the easiest big wildlife spectacles in Spain to see.
The village of Fuente de Piedra is small, so most visitors base themselves in Antequera, about 20 minutes' drive away. That's good news: Antequera has a UNESCO-listed set of dolmens, a Moorish fortress, El Torcal's rock formations and excellent food, so you get a full trip, not just a birding stop.
Here are the best places to stay for Fuente de Piedra, chosen for different travelers and different priorities.
Best Location: Hotel Infante Antequera
Hotel Infante is a 3-star hotel just off the Plaza Coso Viejo in the centre of Antequera, with a rooftop pool and terrace looking out over the city's churches and the Alcazaba.
You're in walking distance of the old town and restaurants, with an easy drive to the lagoon at dawn or dusk, when the flamingos are most active.

Best Value: Hotel Manzanito
Hotel Manzanito is a no-frills 2-star right next to Antequera's main square, close to the tourist office and the climb to the Alcazaba. Rooms are clean and good-sized, and rates are among the lowest in town.
For a wildlife trip where you'll be out at first light, that's all you need.
Best for Families: Apartamentos Antequera
Apartamentos Antequera offers self-catering apartments with fully equipped kitchens, laundry, private parking and a communal rooftop terrace with views. There's a two-night minimum.
With kids, a kitchen and separate rooms make early wildlife mornings and late Spanish dinners much easier to juggle. It's a steep walk up from the centre, so be ready for a little climb.
Luxury: Parador de Antequera
The Parador de Antequera is a modern building in green grounds a few minutes' walk outside the old centre, with a pool, a relaxed atmosphere and some of the best food in town.
It's the most comfortable base in the area, with easy parking for the drive to Fuente de Piedra and El Torcal.
