The Most Beautiful Birds in Spain (No Birdwatcher Credentials Required)

You do not need to be a birdwatcher to be stopped in your tracks by the birds in Spain. Some of the most beautiful birds in Europe live here, and unlike the shy, fleeting birds of the north that vanish before you get a proper look, many of Spain's most spectacular species are easy to find, obvious once you know what you are looking for, and the kind of thing that makes non-birders pick up binoculars for the first time.
The hoopoe
If you are spending any time in Spain between spring and autumn and you hear a low, repetitive hoop-hoop-hoop call, stop and look up. The hoopoe is one of the most distinctive birds in Europe: sandy-orange, with a dramatic black-and-white striped crest that fans out when it lands, and a long curved bill it uses to probe the ground for insects. It looks genuinely exotic, and it is common across most of Spain in the warmer months. The Iberian Peninsula is its most important breeding area in all of Europe. When you see one for the first time, you will wonder how you ever missed it before.
The bee-eater
The European bee-eater might be the most beautiful bird most people in northern Europe have never seen. It is a rainbow of turquoise, gold, chestnut, and green, and it travels in noisy flocks that fill the air with a liquid, rolling call. It arrives from Africa in spring and spends the summer hunting flying insects, including bees, which it catches in midair and beats against a branch to remove the stinger before swallowing. They nest in sandy banks in colonies, and a colony in full activity is one of the most cheerful wildlife spectacles you can stumble into. Look for them from late April through September, especially in Extremadura, Andalucia, and the river valleys of the interior.
The roller
Spring and early summer are the richest. Extremadura is the single best region for the full variety: roller, bee-eater, stork, vulture, and eagle all in the same landscape, and Monfragüe is the crown jewel.
The flamingo

The white stork
White storks are enormous, unmissable, and completely unbothered by people. They build huge platform nests on church towers, chimneys, and rooftops across Spain, and both parents stand guard with a patience that makes them easy to watch. They arrive from Africa in late winter and spring. Extremadura has some of the highest densities in Europe.
The European kingfisher
Kingfishers are present year-round on rivers and streams across Spain. They are iridescent rather than simply colorful, and the difference only becomes obvious when one shoots past you at river level and you realize you just saw a spark of electric blue that does not seem to belong in this part of the world. Sit quietly near water for fifteen minutes and your chances are good.
When and where
Spring and early summer are the richest. Extremadura is the single best region for the full variety: roller, bee-eater, stork, vulture, and eagle all in the same landscape. Andalucia adds flamingos and hoopoes. If you are based on the Costa Blanca or Costa Tropical, hoopoes will likely find you without any effort at all.
You do not need equipment
A pair of cheap binoculars is useful but not required for most of these. The hoopoe, the stork, and the flamingo are visible with the naked eye.
