Where to Stay in La Palma in March: The Best Hotels for Stargazing, Volcanoes and the Sea

4 min read

La Palma is our own March pick. It's the island for people who want the Canaries without the resort strip: volcanoes you can walk around at the San Antonio visitor center, snorkeling off Fuencaliente, laurel forests, and night skies so clear that some of the world's major telescopes sit on the Roque de los Muchachos above the clouds.

La Palma isn't a big-brand island. Hotels are mostly independent and spread out, and the island is steep and winding, so where you stay shapes how much time you spend driving. The east side has the capital, Santa Cruz, and the airport. The west side, around Los Llanos and Tazacorte, is sunnier. The south, at Fuencaliente, is where the volcanoes meet the sea.

Here are the best hotels in La Palma for March, chosen for different travelers and different priorities.

Best Location: Hotel San Telmo, Santa Cruz de La Palma

Santa Cruz de La Palma is one of the most beautiful colonial towns in the Canaries, with wooden balconies, cobbled streets and a seafront promenade, and it's close to the airport and the main roads to the north and south. Hotel San Telmo is in a restored 17th-century building in the old quarter, with ocean-facing balconies.

It's small and best suited to couples and adults looking for a relaxing base. Walking out in the evening to dinner in the old town, then heading up the mountain for stargazing the next night, is the La Palma rhythm, and Santa Cruz makes that easy. Rates often start around $110 a night.

Best Value: Hotel Benahoare, Los Llanos de Aridane

Los Llanos de Aridane is the main town of the sunny west side, and Hotel Benahoare is widely recommended as outstandingly good value. Rooms have balconies with views, and it's an affordable base for exploring the west coast, nearby beaches and walking routes.

Rates often start around $130 a night. Staying on the west side puts you closer to the afternoon sun and to Tazacorte's harbor and beach, and it's a reasonable drive both south to the volcanoes at Fuencaliente and up to the observatory roads.

Best for Families: La Palma Princess, Fuencaliente

La Palma Princess is the island's big family resort, set on a clifftop in Fuencaliente in the volcanic south. It has 484 rooms in low Canarian-style buildings, seven outdoor pools, a Kids Zone with its own pool, a spa and several restaurants.

The location is the bonus: the San Antonio volcano visitor center and the snorkeling spots around Fuencaliente are right in this part of the island, so you can do the volcano walk in the morning and be back at the pool by lunch. Parents also get access to the adults-only Esencia de la Palma area for a quiet break.

Luxury and Most Unique: Hacienda de Abajo, Tazacorte

Hacienda de Abajo is the most special place to stay on La Palma. It's a former 17th-century sugar plantation in Tazacorte, restored across four buildings into 32 rooms and suites filled with original artworks and antiques, and it calls itself the first emblematic hotel in the Canary Islands.

There's a heated pool, a spa with jacuzzi and sauna, two restaurants and gardens with sea views. It's best for couples and adults rather than families. If you're coming to La Palma to slow down, this is the island at its most romantic. Rates often start around $345 a night.
