Where to Go in Spain in April: The Best Pick for Every Kind of Trip

April is the month Spain stops asking you to hedge your bets. The rain that hangs around the north into spring is easing, the heat that shuts down the south by June hasn't arrived yet, and two of the country's biggest, most genuinely Spanish festivals, Semana Santa and Feria de Abril, both land inside it. It's a real contender for the single best all-around month to visit.

Same approach as always: one place for six different kinds of trips, plus our own pick for the month. Prices, dates and event specifics can shift year to year, so double-check anything time-sensitive before you build a day around it.

For Beach Lovers: Peñíscola, Castellón

Peñíscola looks unreal before you even get to the beach: a walled old town stacked on a rocky peninsula, capped by the Papa Luna castle, with water on three sides. It's not a secret (it's been a film location more than once), but it's a real working beach town rather than a resort strip, with a long, wide, family-friendly stretch of sand on either side of the peninsula and none of the intensity of the Costa del Sol. April gets you warm enough afternoons and a town that hasn't filled up with summer crowds yet.

Weather in April: highs around 20°C (68°F), about 46mm (1.8in) of rain over roughly 10 days, bring a light layer for evenings, but daytime is genuinely pleasant.

For Culture & Food Seekers: Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz

Jerez is where sherry, flamenco, and horses all genuinely come from, not a marketing version of any of them. Centuries-old bodegas like Tío Pepe and Sandeman offer real tastings and cellar tours, the Barrio de Santiago is one of the true birthplaces of flamenco with peñas (small clubs) where it's still performed for its own sake rather than for tourists, and the Real Escuela Andaluza del Arte Ecuestre puts on a genuinely impressive Andalusian horse show. Add in some of the best tapas bars in Cádiz province and this is a full sensory day, not a single-attraction stop.

Weather in April: highs around 23°C (73°F), about 58mm (2.3in) of rain over roughly 11 days, a normal mix of wet and dry days, nothing heavy or persistent.

For Hikers & Mountain Lovers: Peñagolosa, Castellón

Peñagolosa is the roof of Castellón province: 1,813 meters, and on a clear day the views from the top stretch across five provinces. The classic route starts at the Sant Joan de Penyagolosa monastery, threading through pine forest before a genuinely challenging final push to the summit. It's a real hike, not a stroll (plan for it accordingly), but the monastery itself sits in beautiful forested terrain with easier walking trails nearby if you've got younger kids who aren't up for the full ascent.

Weather in April: highs around 17°C (63°F), about 72mm (2.8in) of rain over roughly 12 days, this is real mountain weather, so pack layers and check conditions before you commit to the summit.

For Animal & Wildlife Lovers: La Gomera, Canary Islands

Spring is genuinely the best window of the year for whale and dolphin watching off La Gomera: sighting probability runs as high as 99% this time of year, with resident pods of pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins joined by the occasional blue, sei, or Bryde's whale for anyone lucky enough to catch one. Boats head out from Valle Gran Rey and other harbor towns, and it's a genuinely good option for kids since sightings are close to a sure thing rather than a hopeful long shot. April is also one of the driest, clearest months on the island if you want to pair it with hiking in Garajonay National Park.

For Worldschoolers & Families: Sigüenza, Guadalajara

Sigüenza is a genuinely striking medieval town: a 12th-century castle (now a parador aka hotel) looming over a cathedral-anchored old town, cobblestone streets, and a scale that's easy for kids to explore on foot without wearing anyone out. Right next door is the Barranco del Río Dulce Natural Park, where griffon vultures, Egyptian vultures, and Bonelli's eagles nest in the river cliffs alongside otters and kingfishers, there's even a live vulture-nest webcam at the Mandayona interpretation center, plus a viewpoint dedicated to the naturalist Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente.

For Unique Experience Seekers: El Hierro & La Graciosa, Canary Islands

Two of Spain's least-known islands, both genuinely strange in the best way. El Hierro is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve where wind has permanently bent an entire forest of juniper trees sideways at El Sabinar (they look almost cartoonish, frozen mid-lean) and the island was once considered the literal edge of the known world, marked by an old Prime Meridian point at Punta Orchilla. La Graciosa, just off Lanzarote, is Spain's newest officially inhabited Canary Island (recognized in 2018), with about 700 residents, no paved roads, and travel by sand track, bike, or 4x4 only. Together they make a genuine "did you know Spain has this" pair.

Worth a special mention too: Sant Jordi in Barcelona on April 23rd, where couples exchange books and roses on the streets around La Rambla and Passeig de Gràcia, tied to the local legend of a knight and a dragon. It's really only a one-day thing, so it works best folded into a bigger Barcelona trip rather than built around on its own.

Weather in April: El Hierro highs around 21.6°C (71°F) with about 14mm (0.55in) of rain over roughly 1 day; La Graciosa highs around 23°C (73°F) and nearly no rain at all, both about as dry and mild as the Canary Islands get.

My Pick for April: Feria de Abril, Sevilla

If I could only go to one festival in Spain all year, this would be it. Feria de Abril is the quintessential Spanish festival: the outfits are traditional Andalucían dress at its most beautiful, there are horses everywhere, flamenco dancing in the casetas, and an atmosphere unlike anything else on the calendar. Yes, it's crowded, but it's worth the hype. I really want to go get special dresses with my daughter someday. You don't need to spend an entire trip at the Feria, one or two days folded into a bigger Andalucía trip is plenty, but it's basically the most Spanish thing anyone could do, and it's the pride of Andalucía.

Confirmed dates for 2027 are April 13th through 18th. Weather in April: highs around 24°C (75°F), about 55mm (2.2in) of rain over roughly 11 days, expect near-perfect Feria weather.

What to Wear in Spain in April

April in Spain is variable -- warm and sunny in Andalusia and the Mediterranean coast, cooler and wetter in the north. The range between a Seville afternoon (25°C) and a Basque Country morning (10°C, rainy) is wider than most people expect. Pack layers that work across both scenarios.

Southern Spain and the Mediterranean Coast

Light trousers, a cotton or linen shirt, and a light jacket for evenings cover the vast majority of April days in Andalusia, Valencia, and Murcia. A scarf is useful -- evenings can still be cool even when afternoons hit 22-25°C. For festivals like Feria de Abril, dressing up is part of the event; the traje de flamenca or smart alternatives are standard.

Northern Spain

The Basque Country, Cantabria, Asturias, and Galicia are genuinely cold and wet in April. A waterproof jacket, warm layers, and waterproof boots are sensible. Don't underestimate the Atlantic north -- it behaves like Ireland or the Scottish Highlands in April, not like Mediterranean Spain.

Madrid and Castilla in April can be warm during the day but cold at night -- it sits at 650m altitude. Semana Santa Timing

Easter (Semana Santa) falls in April most years and transforms Spain's cities. Seville, Malaga, Córdoba, and dozens of smaller cities hold major processions. Book accommodation six to twelve months ahead for Seville and Málaga during Holy Week -- it is the single most booked-out week in Spain all year.

Feria de Abril

Seville's Feria de Abril follows Semana Santa by two weeks, making late April an extraordinary time to be in the city -- two consecutive massive events, both with different characters. Feria week accommodation also sells out well in advance.

Weather Variability

April weather in Spain is genuinely unpredictable. The south and east can be warm and sunny for days at a time, then cool and rainy for 24 hours. The north can be grey for a week. Check forecasts within 3-4 days of travel rather than booking around general expectations.

Shoulder Season Benefits

Outside of Semana Santa and Feria, April is excellent shoulder season. Prices are significantly lower than summer, accommodation is available, and major sights are uncrowded. The Alhambra, Sagrada Familia, and any Gaudi site in April will have a fraction of the summer queues -- though booking ahead is still smart.
