What to Do in Sigüenza: The Perfect Medieval Town for Worldschooling Families in Spain
Updated: Oct 4
Sigüenza is the medieval city most people who visit Spain never find. It sits in the high plateau of Guadalajara province — 130 kilometres from Madrid, two hours by train — and it has an almost fully intact 12th-century centre: a Romanesque-Gothic cathedral begun in 1124, a castle above it (now a Parador), and streets of stone houses that haven't changed in outline since the 13th century. The international tourist numbers are low. The Spanish visitor numbers are high enough that the restaurants and cafés are good. The balance is exactly right.
April is the month the light changes on the Castilian meseta — the high plateau opens up, the wildflowers cover the road verges, and Sigüenza in the morning before the Spanish visitors arrive from Madrid for lunch feels genuinely medieval. For worldschooling families, this is the curriculum without the effort.

Best for First-Timers: Sigüenza Cathedral Guided Tour
The Catedral de Santa María de Sigüenza was begun in 1124 and took 400 years to complete — it's a living architectural textbook, moving from Romanesque east end through Transitional Gothic nave to Renaissance chapels and sacristy. The tomb of Martín Vázquez de Arce (El Doncel, the page who died in the Reconquista siege of Granada in 1486) is one of the great pieces of Spanish funerary sculpture — the young man reclining with a book, carved in alabaster at 21 years old, staring at something that isn't there.
The guided tour is worth doing — the cathedral is large and the specific pieces (the sacristy ceiling with its 300 sculpted heads, the Mudejar chapel) require direction to find. April mornings are quiet and the light through the rose window is at its best.

Best for Families & Kids: Castle of Sigüenza — Now a Parador
The castle of Sigüenza sits above the old city and has been continuously occupied since the Romans — Visigoths, Moors, bishops, and the current Parador management have all held it. The castle's history is one of the great compressed narratives of Spanish medieval history in a single building. Children who've been learning Spanish history find the physical reality of the castle — the thickness of the walls, the scale of the courtyard, the views over the meseta — makes everything more legible.
Even if you're not staying at the Parador, the public areas of the castle are accessible. The views from the battlements over the city and the Henares valley are among the best in central Spain. The Parador restaurant is worth lunch — the kitchen works with local Guadalajara products and the dining room is in the original hall.

Best if You Only Have a Few Hours: Old Town Walking Circuit
The Sigüenza old town circuit takes 90 minutes without a guide — from the cathedral, along the Calle Mayor, up through the Jewish quarter (one of the best-preserved in Castilla-La Mancha), to the castle viewpoint, and back. The streets are car-free through most of the old city and the medieval fabric is genuinely intact — no modern infill, no chain shops, no inappropriate signage. It's one of those places that photographs well but is better in person.
A market runs on Saturdays in the Plaza Mayor — local produce, artisan goods, and the slow Saturday morning pace of a Castilian town that still functions as a market town. Worth timing a visit around.

Most Unique: Tren Medieval — The Steam Train to Sigüenza from Madrid
The Tren Medieval is a seasonal steam train service that runs from Madrid Chamartín to Sigüenza on selected Sundays from spring through autumn — a 2-hour journey on restored carriages with period dress actors, music, and the theatrical staging of a medieval arrival at Sigüenza station. The town meets the train in costume and the day includes guided castle and cathedral visits.
For families with children: this is the format that makes the day into an event rather than an excursion. The steam train itself is a draw independent of the destination. Tickets book up early — check the RENFE website for the spring schedule, usually beginning in April.

Best Guided Experience: Molina de Aragón & Sigüenza Circuit — Two Medieval Towns
Molina de Aragón, 90 kilometres east of Sigüenza, is another nearly intact medieval city — a 12th-century castle on the hill, a largely medieval street plan below it, and almost entirely unvisited by international tourists. The combination of Sigüenza and Molina in a day gives you two different expressions of the same medieval Castilian moment: the episcopal city (Sigüenza, bishop-built, cathedral-centred) and the frontier fortress town (Molina, built to hold the Aragón border). The landscape between them — the high Guadalajara sierra — is excellent walking country.

Looking for Somewhere to Stay?
The Parador de Sigüenza is one of the great Parador stays in Spain — you sleep in the 12th-century bishop's castle with the views of the meseta outside the window. Rates are reasonable by Parador standards, especially midweek. There are also smaller guesthouses in the old city for budget-conscious visits. Browse hotels in Sigüenza →
