What to Do in Cuenca: Ciudad Encantada, Hanging Houses & Abstract Art
Updated: 4 days ago
Ciudad Encantada — the Enchanted City — is a karst landscape north of Cuenca where millions of years of erosion have produced limestone formations that look like mushrooms, bridges, ships, and seated figures on a scale that is genuinely difficult to comprehend until you're standing among them. It's one of Spain's strangest landscapes and one of its most visited natural sites, which in February means almost entirely empty.
Cuenca itself is a UNESCO World Heritage city — the hanging houses (casas colgadas) projecting over the gorge of the Huécar river are the defining image, but the old city and the abstract art museum inside the hanging houses are the substance. Here's what to book.

Best for First-Timers: Ciudad Encantada Guided Walk — Karst Formations & Geology
The Ciudad Encantada circuit takes about 90 minutes without a guide and about 3 hours with one — the difference being the geology (how karst landscapes form, why the specific sequence of limestone, clay, and water produced these shapes), the names of the formations (the Sea of Stone, the Bridge of the Moors, the Mushrooms), and the ecological context (the holm oak woodland between the formations, the birds of prey that nest in the rock faces). In February the formations are occasionally snow-dusted and the light in the gorges is at its most dramatic.

Best for Families & Kids: Cuenca Hanging Houses & Old City Walking Tour
The casas colgadas of Cuenca are houses built on the edge of the gorge with their foundations on the cliff face — several storeys of medieval housing that project over a 70-metre drop to the river below. They look precarious, they have looked precarious for 700 years, and one of them now houses the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art — a genuinely excellent collection of 20th-century Spanish abstraction (Tàpies, Chillida, Zobel, Saura) in the most incongruous possible setting.
The walking tour of Cuenca old city covers the hanging houses, the Gothic cathedral (the first Gothic cathedral built in Spain), the San Pablo bridge over the gorge, and the history of the city as a 11th-century Moorish fortress taken by Alfonso VIII in 1177. For families: the gorge drop below the hanging houses is the guaranteed attention-getter.

Best if You Only Have a Few Hours: Serrania de Cuenca Birdwatching
The limestone hills and pine forests of the Serranía de Cuenca — the natural park that surrounds the city — are good habitat for birds of prey in winter: golden eagle, booted eagle, peregrine falcon, and the less common black stork along the rivers. The Júcar river gorge below Cuenca city is itself a good scanning point. In February the eagle pair that nests on the Cuenca gorge cliffs is at the start of its breeding season and the birds are highly visible.

Most Unique: Cuenca's Abstract Art Museum — The Hanging House Gallery
The Museo de Arte Abstracto Español is one of the strangest and best gallery experiences in Spain — a collection of mid-20th-century Spanish abstract art assembled by Fernando Zóbel and donated to the state, installed in the medieval hanging houses above the Huécar gorge. The combination of the art (Chillida sculptures, Tàpies surfaces, Saura figures), the medieval architecture, and the view down the gorge from the gallery windows is genuinely unusual.
Free on Fridays. Open Tuesday through Sunday. February means no queues and the light through the gorge-facing windows is at its most horizontal and dramatic.

Best Guided Experience: Day Trip to Alarcón Medieval Castle & Júcar Gorge
Alarcón is a medieval castle-village 90 kilometres from Cuenca, built on a promontory almost entirely surrounded by a loop of the Júcar river — the village occupies the peninsula of rock, the castle crowns it, and the river surrounds it on three sides like a natural moat. Now a Parador, the castle interior is open for visits and the views over the river canyon from the battlements are one of the better vantage points in Castilla-La Mancha. The drive from Cuenca follows the Júcar gorge, which is worth scanning for black stork and eagle.
