Where to Stay in Barcelona in December (First-Timer's Quick Guide): The Best Hotels for Every Traveler

Barcelona in December is one of those places that surprises people who think they've already figured it out. The summer crowds are gone. The Gothic Quarter is walkable at a human pace. The Palau de la Música Catalana fills with Christmas concerts that will stop you cold if you've never seen that building lit up from the inside. And the Caga Tió tradition — Catalans beating a log with a stick until it produces candy and gifts — is exactly the kind of joyfully bizarre cultural experience that makes Spain different from anywhere else.

It's also a city where the hotel options vary wildly, and where you stay shapes your whole experience. Stay on the wrong end of La Rambla and you're in tourist chaos. Stay in the right neighborhood and Barcelona feels like a city that belongs to you.

Here are the best hotels in Barcelona for December, chosen for different travelers and different priorities.

Best Location: Hotel Neri Relais & Châteaux

The Gothic Quarter is the heart of Barcelona's Christmas, and the Hotel Neri is the Gothic Quarter's finest address. It occupies an 18th-century palace with original stone walls, a quiet rooftop terrace, and an intimate restaurant that takes its food seriously. The Cathedral Christmas market — one of Barcelona's best — is steps from the front door.

Relais & Châteaux properties are independent luxury hotels that earn their designation through service and character, not brand infrastructure, and the Neri is exactly that. It's small — 22 rooms — which means the staff knows who you are. The building has the kind of quiet that medieval stone walls create, which is remarkable given you're in the center of one of Europe's most visited cities. For a December trip where you want to walk out the door and directly into the Barcelona Christmas experience, this is the most well-placed hotel on this list.

Best for Families: Hotel Arts Barcelona

The Hotel Arts is one of those properties that solves multiple family problems at once. It sits near Barceloneta Beach and the Port Olímpic — not the most central location for the Christmas markets, but extremely well-placed for keeping kids happy. The Barcelona Zoo and the aquarium are close. The beach is right there. The outdoor pool stays usable in December's mild weather more often than you'd expect.

Family suites give you real space rather than the two-adults-and-two-kids-in-a-box situation that plagues central Barcelona hotels. The hotel itself is a 44-story tower with views that genuinely impress — arriving here with children who've never seen the Mediterranean from that height is a moment. For families who want comfort, space, and the ability to run energy out of children without relying entirely on sightseeing, this is the right base.

Best Value: Hotel Praktik Bakery

The Hotel Praktik Bakery in Eixample does something genuinely clever — it puts an artisan bakery in the ground floor of a chic design hotel and lets the smell of fresh bread do the marketing. It works. Reviews consistently mention the breakfast as a highlight, which is saying something in a city where breakfast culture is admittedly not Spain's strongest suit.

The location in Eixample puts you on the Gaudí corridor — Casa Batlló and Casa Milà are a short walk, and Plaça de Catalunya with its Christmas market is easily reachable on foot. Rooms are modern and well-designed for the price point, which tends to sit well below comparable hotels on Passeig de Gràcia. For travelers who want a stylish, well-located base without paying luxury rates, this is one of the best calls in the city.

Luxury: Majestic Hotel & Spa Barcelona

The Majestic has been on Passeig de Gràcia since 1918 and it hasn't lost its sense of occasion. This is the classic Barcelona luxury experience — grand interiors, a full-service spa, rooms that feel properly considered rather than decorator-approved, and a location that puts you equidistant from Casa Batlló and Casa Milà. In December, the Passeig de Gràcia Christmas lights are some of the most photographed in Spain, and you'll have them right outside.

It's the kind of hotel where the staff anticipates what you need rather than waiting to be asked. The spa is excellent, the rooftop views are strong, and the breakfast is the sort that sets the tone for an entire day. If you're going to splurge on one night in Barcelona, this is the building worth doing it in — on one of Europe's most beautiful boulevards, in the middle of the city's most iconic architecture.

Most Unique: Cotton House Hotel, Autograph Collection

The Cotton House Hotel is housed in the former headquarters of the Guild of Cotton Manufacturers of Barcelona, and it carries that heritage beautifully. Grand staircases, soaring ceilings, architectural details that no new-build could replicate — and a contemporary design layer that makes it feel curated rather than preserved. It's on Gran Vía de les Corts Catalanes in Eixample, which means you're centrally placed without being in tourist-circuit territory.

What makes it worth including here is the sense of place — you're sleeping in a building that was genuinely important to Barcelona's industrial history, in a neighborhood that real Barcelonans use every day. The library, the bar, the marble and the light — it all adds up to something you won't find at a standard hotel. For travelers who want Barcelona to feel like more than a backdrop, this is the stay.

Best for Points: Hyatt Regency Barcelona Tower

Full disclosure: we've stayed here three times. The Hyatt Regency Barcelona Tower is not a walking-to-everything hotel — it's in the Hospitalet de Llobregat, southwest of the city center, and you'll want a car or be comfortable with a short drive to reach the main attractions. If that's your situation, it's one of the best Hyatt points redemptions in all of Spain.

The hotel itself is beautiful — a proper tower with views, one of the most impressive breakfast buffets we've encountered anywhere, and the kind of comfortable beds that Hyatt flagship properties do consistently well. The pool is a little underwhelming for the scale of the hotel, but everything else earns its reputation. It's a short drive from the airport, which makes it a logical first or last night option, and the transport connections into the city are easy enough once you know the route. If you're sitting on World of Hyatt points and want to stretch them, this is one of the smartest redemptions on the board in Spain.
