Where to Stay in Galicia in December: The Best Hotels for Santiago, Misa do Galo and Vigo's Lights
Galicia is our own December pick, and it's the one we most want to do ourselves. Christmas Eve here means Misa do Galo, the midnight Mass, choirs and gaita music, and a pot of caldo galego waiting at home afterward. Santiago de Compostela is at its most atmospheric in the winter rain, and down the coast Vigo puts on one of the most famous Christmas light displays in Spain.
Most travelers will base themselves in Santiago, where the cathedral is the center of everything, and some will add a night or two in Vigo for the lights. The two cities are about an hour apart by train, so doing both is easy.
Here are the best hotels in Galicia for December, chosen for different travelers and different priorities.
Best Location: Parador de Santiago, Hostal dos Reis Católicos
No hotel in Spain is better placed for a Christmas in Santiago. The Parador sits on the Praza do Obradoiro, directly beside the cathedral, so on Christmas Eve you walk out the door and you're there. It was built in 1499 as a royal hospital for pilgrims and claims to be the oldest hotel in the world.
Expect stone-vaulted ceilings, cloistered courtyards and four-poster beds, with dining rooms set in the old stables. It's a splurge in December, so book early, but for a once-in-a-lifetime Christmas Eve in Santiago, this is the address.

Best Value: Hotel Costa Vella
Hotel Costa Vella is a small 14-room hotel with a garden, about 300 meters from the cathedral and right next to the Museum of Pilgrimage. You get an old-town location at a fraction of what the Parador costs, and a quiet garden to come back to after a day on the wet granite streets.
Some rooms are attic doubles with views, others have a glassed-in gallery with a sitting area, the classic Galician touch. Rates typically run around €41 to €60 per person per night, there's private parking (rare in central Santiago), and it has the kind of personal feel that larger hotels in town don't.
Best for Families: NH Collection Santiago de Compostela
December in Galicia is wet, and with children that changes your hotel priorities. The NH Collection sits in parkland on the edge of the city, about 15 minutes on foot or six minutes by car from the cathedral, and it has an indoor pool for the days when the rain wins.
With 150 rooms, larger premium rooms and suites, supervised kids' activities and easy parking, it's built for the logistics of family travel in a way the old-town hotels aren't. You give up the walk-out-the-door charm, but you gain space and a pool, and the old town is still close.
Luxury: A Quinta da Auga Hotel & Spa, Relais & Châteaux
A Quinta da Auga is a restored 18th-century paper mill set in gardens about five minutes from Santiago, and a Relais & Châteaux member since 2011. It mixes period details with modern comfort, and it has the calm, green feel of a country estate while staying close to the city.
The spa is the reason to come in December: a hydro circuit for after a cold, damp day in town. Its restaurant, Filigrana, serves contemporary Galician cooking with local products and regional wines. If you want Christmas in Santiago with a proper retreat to come back to, this is it.
Most Unique: Gran Hotel Nagari Boutique & Spa, Vigo
If Vigo's Christmas lights are part of your plan, stay a night or two in Vigo itself so you can see them after dark without worrying about the last train. The Gran Hotel Nagari is a 63-room boutique hotel on Plaza de Compostela, a few blocks from the port, with a minimalist, lightly Japanese-inspired design.
What makes it unique is the rooftop: a heated circular current pool with bubble beds and jets, and a bar at night with views over the city. Floating in warm water on a rooftop in December, then walking out into one of Spain's most famous light displays, is a Christmas you won't get anywhere else.
