Where to Stay in the Ribeira Sacra in November: Monasteries, Canyons and Wine Country Hotels

4 min read

The Ribeira Sacra in November is Galicia at its most atmospheric. The terraced vineyards along the Sil and Miño canyons turn gold and red, the chestnut harvest is in, and the Magosto, Galicia's chestnut festival, fills village squares with roasting fires and new wine.

This is a spread-out, rural region with winding canyon roads, so where you stay decides how much you drive. Monforte de Lemos is the practical hub, with restaurants and a train station. The canyon villages of Parada de Sil and Castro Caldelas put you closest to the viewpoints and boat trips. Ourense, about an hour away, is the easiest base for a big-city Magosto on November 11.

Here are the best places to stay in the Ribeira Sacra in November, chosen for different travelers and different priorities.

Best Location: Parador de Monforte de Lemos

Monforte de Lemos is the capital of the Ribeira Sacra wine country, and its Parador sits at the top of the town in the former monastery of San Vicente do Pino, next to the medieval keep and the counts' palace.

It's the most practical base in the region: restaurants and the Ribeira Sacra wine centre are in town, the canyons are a short drive away, and rates are surprisingly fair for a monastery stay.

Best Value: Hotel Casa de Caldelas, Castro Caldelas

Castro Caldelas is a castle town on the southern side of the Sil canyon, and Hotel Casa de Caldelas is one of the best-rated small hotels in the region, with rates that often start around 50 euros a night.

You're close to the canyon viewpoints and the boat trips on the Sil, and the town itself, with its castle above the valley, is one of the prettiest in the Ribeira Sacra.

Best for Families: Iberik Hotel Balneario Augas Santas

In Pantón, a short drive from Monforte, Augas Santas is a spa resort with thermal pools and a buffet restaurant. It's a big, easy hotel where everyone can do their own thing, which is what you want on a family trip in a rural region.

On a grey November afternoon, warm water after a morning of walking the canyon trails keeps everyone happy.

Luxury: Áurea Palacio de Sober

Áurea Palacio de Sober is a restored Galician pazo, a country manor house, in the heart of the Amandi wine area of the Ribeira Sacra. It's the most upscale stay in the region, with elegant rooms and balconies looking out over the countryside.

Sober is surrounded by some of the steepest terraced vineyards in Spain, so this is the base for a wine-focused trip with tastings, long lunches and canyon viewpoints.

Most Unique: Parador de Santo Estevo

Santo Estevo is one of the jewels of the Parador network: a former Benedictine monastery with three cloisters, perched above the Sil canyon and surrounded by forest. It was declared a national monument in 1923.

There's a spa with a hydrotherapy circuit and treatments built on local wine and chestnuts, plus catamaran trips and hiking routes right from the door. In November, with mist rising from the canyon and the chestnut trees turning, there's no more beautiful place to sleep in Galicia.
