Where to Stay in Huelva for La Rábida and Columbus's Ships: The Best Hotels for Families
Huelva is our March pick for Worldschoolers & Families, and it's one of the best history lessons in Spain. At the Monasterio de La Rábida, Columbus found support for his voyage, and just below it the Muelle de las Carabelas has full-size replicas of the Niña, Pinta and Santa María that kids can climb aboard, alongside a recreated 15th-century port.
The sights cluster around Palos de la Frontera, the town Columbus sailed from in 1492, a short drive from Huelva city. The Costa de la Luz beaches and Doñana are close too, so you can base yourself in town, by the sea, or somewhere in between.
Here are the best places to stay for a La Rábida trip in March, chosen for different travelers and different priorities.
Best Location: Hotel La Pinta, Palos de la Frontera
For the shortest possible trip to the ships, stay in Palos de la Frontera itself. Hotel La Pinta, named for one of Columbus's caravels, is on Calle Rábida, about a four-minute drive from the monastery and the Muelle de las Carabelas.
It's a simple, 30-room hotel with a restaurant, bar, terrace and free parking, and rooms that sleep up to three, which helps for small families. It's not a destination hotel, and there's no lift, but you're sleeping in the town where the 1492 voyage began, minutes from everything on your worldschooling list.

Best Value: Senator Huelva Hotel
Huelva city is the practical, budget-friendly base, with restaurants, shops and easy access to La Rábida across the river. The Senator Huelva Hotel is the standout value pick, with a guest rating around 8.8 out of 10 from hundreds of reviews and rates that can start around $50 a night.
It's about a 15-minute drive to the monastery and the ships. Huelva is a working port city rather than a resort, so it's the base for families who want good rates and real-life Spain, then spend their days at the sights and on the beaches.
Best for Families: Hotel Fuerte El Rompido
If you want a proper family base with things for the kids to do between history lessons, Hotel Fuerte El Rompido is the pick. It's near the Marina El Rompido on the Río Piedras natural area, about 900 meters from the beach, with a miniclub, children's entertainment, a play area and children's pools.
Parents get a spa with a heated indoor pool, sauna and Turkish bath, and the El Rompido golf course is nearby. It's a drive along the coast to La Rábida. One timing note: the hotel opens for the season in March, so check it's open for your exact dates before booking an early-March trip.
Luxury and Most Unique: Parador de Mazagón
Huelva isn't a luxury-hotel destination, and the most memorable stay here is the Parador de Mazagón. It sits in a pine forest above the broad, empty beach at Mazagón, with gardens, a heated outdoor pool, a gym, sauna and jacuzzi, and bright rooms, some with sea-view terraces.
It's a short drive to La Rábida and the ships, and on the edge of the Doñana area, so you can pair the Columbus sites with a wildlife morning. Walking down through the pines to an almost deserted Atlantic beach in March is the kind of moment kids remember.
