San Isidro is Madrid's patron saint festival — May 15th is the feast day, but the celebrations run for a week around it. The meadow of San Isidro on the south bank of the Manzanares fills with madrileños in traditional dress (chulapos and chulapas in flat cap, waistcoat, and polka-dot dress) dancing the chotis. The city puts on free outdoor concerts and theatre across the parks. Las Ventas bullfighting arena runs its most prestigious season. And May in Madrid — warm, clear, and before the summer heat arrives — is the month to be there.
The festival is free to attend. The bullfighting, the specific concerts, and the activities below are what to book.
Best for First-Timers: San Isidro Festival Guided Experience — Chulapos, Chotis & the Meadow
The Pradera de San Isidro on May 15th is the centrepiece — the meadow where the saint's hermitage sits fills with madrileños who pack a picnic, buy rosquillas (the festival doughnuts, in four specific varieties), and dance the chotis in the afternoon. It's intensely local in a way that doesn't exclude visitors who understand what they're looking at — and that's where the guided experience adds the most value.
A guided morning of the Pradera covers the history of the festival (it's been running in this form since at least the 18th century), the dress (the chulapo culture of the working-class madrileño neighbourhoods), and the chotis (a dance borrowed from a Bohemian polka and made entirely Madrid's own). The afternoon, once you understand the context, is much more enjoyable.

Best for Families & Kids: Retiro Park Rowing & Rose Garden in May
El Retiro Park is at its best in May — the rose garden (La Rosaleda) peaks in mid-May with 4,000 rose bushes in full bloom, the rowing boats on the lake are accessible (the boating lake is the most democratic space in Madrid, €7 for 45 minutes regardless of who you are), and the San Isidro concerts in the park bandstand run free most afternoons of the festival week. The Crystal Palace hosts rotating contemporary art exhibitions and its glass-and-iron structure is worth seeing even empty.
The Retiro is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Paseo del Prado cultural landscape. For families: the rose garden, the lake, the outdoor puppet theatre that runs on weekend afternoons, and the sheer size of the park (150 acres, entirely enclosed) make a full morning here easy.

Best if You Only Have a Few Hours: Las Ventas Bullfighting — San Isidro Season
The San Isidro season at the Plaza de Toros Las Ventas is the most prestigious fortnight in the Spanish bullfighting calendar — the corridas run daily from around May 15th, the best matadores of the season compete here, and the crowd at Las Ventas is the most knowledgeable and the most demanding in Spain. Whether you attend is a personal decision; we include it because it's the single most significant cultural event of the San Isidro period and pretending otherwise would misrepresent the festival.
The bullring itself (1931, Mudéjar Revival architecture, capacity 24,000) is worth visiting as a building on days without a corrida. The Museo Taurino inside covers the history of the corrida in Madrid with artefacts going back to the 18th century.

Most Unique: Madrid Tapas & Vermouth Tour — La Latina & Lavapiés
The San Isidro week is when Madrid's neighbourhood bar culture is at its most visible — verbenas (outdoor street parties with music and food stalls) run in La Latina, Lavapiés, and Malasaña every evening of the festival week. A guided tapas and vermouth tour through La Latina and the Rastro market area covers the specific bars, the food (bocadillo de calamares, the Madrid fried squid sandwich that is the city's most specific snack), and the vermut culture that makes Sunday mornings in Madrid different from anywhere else.

Best Guided Experience: Prado Museum Guided Tour — The Collection in Context
The Museo del Prado is 20 minutes from the Retiro Park and May is a good time to visit — the museum doesn't close in summer but the San Isidro crowds are street-based rather than museum-based, which means the galleries are relatively calm. The guided tour is what separates the Prado from a walk through an enormous building — the specific rooms (the Velázquez collection, Goya's Black Paintings, the Bosch Garden of Earthly Delights) require a guide to cover properly in 2 hours.
