Where to Stay in Madrid in December (First-Timer's Guide): The Best Hotels for Every Traveler

Madrid in December is electric. Gran Vía is strung with lights from one end to the other, Plaza Mayor fills with its famous Belén nativity market, Puerta del Sol is packed with families counting down to Nochebuena, and the whole city leans into the season in a way that feels genuinely Spanish — loud, warm, and built around being together.

For families visiting in December, Madrid is an exceptional choice. The Christmas atmosphere is real here, not manufactured for tourists. The museums are open, the parks are beautiful even in the cool air, and the food is as good as anywhere in Spain. The question isn't whether to come — it's where to base yourself so you can actually experience all of it without spending half your trip in transit.

These are the best hotels in Madrid for December, chosen for different travelers and different priorities.

Best Location: Pestana Plaza Mayor Madrid

If you want to be at the center of Madrid's Christmas — and I mean literally at the center — the Pestana Plaza Mayor puts you inside one of Europe's most iconic squares. The Belén market sets up right outside the door. The lights on Calle Mayor are steps away. Puerta del Sol is a three-minute walk. For a December trip, this is the most immersive location in the city.

The building itself is Baroque, and the corner suites offer panoramic views over the square that will make you feel like you're watching all of Madrid from your own private balcony. It's a four-star property — not the cheapest option on this list, but the location alone justifies it for a Christmas visit. If seeing the Belén market on your way to breakfast every morning sounds like your kind of trip, this is the hotel.

Best for Families: Hotel Riu Plaza España

The Hotel Riu Plaza España is one of the best family-run setups in central Madrid, and the December visit makes a lot of sense here. Family rooms sleep up to five people, which immediately solves the twin-room problem most hotels create. Kids under 12 stay free when using existing bedding — genuinely useful for families traveling with multiple children.

The rooftop pool is heated and open year-round, which sounds counterintuitive in December but is actually a win — you'll have it nearly to yourselves. The breakfast is extensive and includes gluten-free options, high chairs are available, and the location next to the Royal Palace puts you close to the Christmas market in the Plaza de Oriente. The Palacio Real is beautiful at Christmas, and the kids will love the scale of it.

It's a big hotel by Madrid standards — 585 rooms — which means there's always staff available and the logistics of traveling with children are handled smoothly. For a family that wants space, flexibility, and a proper Christmas experience, this is the pick.

Best Value: Petit Palace Puerta del Sol

Puerta del Sol is where Madrid celebrates everything, and in December it's ground zero for the city's biggest Christmas countdown. The Petit Palace Puerta del Sol puts you right on top of it, at a price point that won't make you wince when you see the bill.

Family rooms come with bunk beds — legitimately useful when you're traveling with kids who think bunk beds are the highlight of any trip. Bikes are included for guests, which is a nice touch for exploring beyond the center. The hotel is part of a Spanish chain known for clean, functional, well-located properties without unnecessary frills. It's not going to blow you away with design, but the value-to-location ratio is hard to beat.

For families who want to save their budget for food, day trips, and museum entry rather than sleeping arrangements, this is the right call.

Luxury: Hyatt Centric Gran Vía Madrid

Gran Vía is Madrid's most famous boulevard, and in December it becomes a tunnel of Christmas lights. The Hyatt Centric Gran Vía Madrid sits right on it — a 10-story Art Deco landmark with a design that channels the golden age of radio-era Madrid. It's beautiful, it's central, and the views from the rooftop bar make a December evening feel like something you'll talk about for years.

The rooftop is called Jardín de Diana and overlooks the entire city center. In December, with the lights on Gran Vía below and the night skyline spread out around you, it's one of the better settings in Madrid. The Ondas Bar in the lobby does live DJ sets and has a vermouth library — which is very Spanish and very right. Family suites sleep up to five, breakfast is a proper buffet, and both the Gran Vía and Callao metro stations are literally two minutes from the door.

It's a World of Hyatt property, so if you have points this becomes even more interesting — though we have a separate pick for points below. As a pure luxury stay in December Madrid, it's hard to beat this location and this building.

Most Unique: Gran Hotel Inglés

Madrid's oldest hotel. Open since 1886. If those words mean something to you, the Gran Hotel Inglés is your stay in Madrid.

It's in Barrio de las Letras — the literary quarter, just south of the center, with narrow streets, independent restaurants, and the kind of neighborhood energy that makes you feel like you're actually in Madrid rather than just staying in it. The 48 rooms were designed by architect David Rockwell, and the hotel carries its Art Deco DNA through every space. The spa was the first of its kind in Madrid, styled after the 1920s but fully modern in treatment.

The restaurant takes Spanish cuisine seriously. The wine list is serious. The Reina Victoria Theatre is nearby for anyone who wants a night at the opera or a Christmas concert. It's a small hotel, which means service is attentive in the way only smaller properties can manage.

For a trip that's less about ticking off sights and more about the feel of the city — the one you'll still be thinking about six months later — this is the pick.

Best for Points: Hyatt Regency Hesperia Madrid

If you have World of Hyatt points, the Hyatt Regency Hesperia Madrid on Paseo de la Castellana is one of the most comfortable and practical redemptions in the city. I've stayed here twice and both times left impressed — and I'm not easy to impress in Madrid.

The staff is genuinely warm. The rooms are quiet in a way that central Madrid hotels rarely are, and the beds are what you'd expect from a Hyatt flagship. It's not walking distance to the Belén market, but it's right on a metro line, which makes everything accessible in under 15 minutes. The surrounding neighborhood on the Castellana is also better than most travel content suggests — there are several restaurants within walking distance including a Japanese restaurant that looks like it was transplanted directly from Tokyo, which our family loved. The Natural Science Museum is a short walk away, which is worth building into a December itinerary if you're traveling with curious kids.

It's not a Christmas-lights-out-the-window location, but if you have the points and want a comfortable, well-run hotel where you'll actually rest, this is an excellent use of them.
