Where to Stay in Segovia in January (First-Timer's Guide): The Best Hotels by the Aqueduct and Alcázar

4 min read

Segovia in January is cold, clear and wonderful. The Roman aqueduct, the cathedral and the Alcázar are all within about a 20-minute walk of each other, the snow-capped Sierra de Guadarrama sits on the horizon, and a long lunch of roast suckling pig is exactly what the weather calls for.

Most people visit Segovia as a day trip from Madrid, under half an hour away by high-speed train. Stay the night instead. Once the day-trippers leave, the old town goes quiet, the aqueduct is lit up, and you get the city to yourself the next morning.

Segovia is our January pick for Worldschoolers & Families, and it's compact enough that almost any hotel in the old town works. Here are the best, chosen for different travelers and different priorities.

Best Location: Eurostars Plaza Acueducto

If it's your first time in Segovia, start at the aqueduct. Eurostars Plaza Acueducto sits right beside it, so the first thing you see in the morning is 2,000-year-old Roman engineering, and the main pedestrian street leads you straight up into the old town.

Ask for a room facing the aqueduct. It's also handy for arrivals, since the city bus from the high-speed train station stops at the aqueduct.

Best Value: Hotel Infanta Isabel

Hotel Infanta Isabel sits on the Plaza Mayor, next to the cathedral, with balconies overlooking the square. For a hotel with this location, rates are reasonable, especially in the quieter weeks of January.

Breakfast and valet parking are available, which helps in a city where driving inside the old town is difficult.

Best for Families: Parador de Segovia

The Parador sits on a hillside just outside the city, and its big windows look straight across at Segovia's skyline. For families, it offers what the old town can't: space, easy parking, large public areas and an outdoor pool for the warmer months.

You'll need a car or taxi to get into the centre, but with kids that's often easier than steep old-town streets with a stroller. The view of the city lit up at night is one they'll remember.

Luxury: Áurea Convento Capuchinos

Áurea Convento Capuchinos is a former Capuchin convent turned upscale hotel, with modern design inside historic walls, spacious rooms and underground parking. It's the most stylish place to stay in Segovia and well placed for the sights.

On a January evening, coming back from dinner to a quiet former convent is exactly the Segovia experience you came for.

Most Unique: Hotel San Antonio El Real

This hotel occupies part of the Monastery of San Antonio el Real, founded in the 15th century by King Enrique IV, a few minutes' walk from the aqueduct. The monastery church, with one of the finest Mudéjar wooden ceilings in Spain, sits right alongside.

Rooms are comfortable rather than luxurious, but staying inside a monastery that a king founded is a story your kids will tell for years.
