Where to Stay in Formentera in May: The Best Hotels for Beaches, Bikes and Families
Formentera is our May pick for Beach Lovers. It's the smallest and quietest of the main Balearic Islands, reached only by ferry from Ibiza in about half an hour, with water so clear it looks Caribbean and beaches like Ses Illetes that regularly end up on lists of Europe's best.
May is the sweet spot. The season is just opening, so restaurants and beach bars are back, but the summer crowds and peak prices haven't arrived. The sea is still fresh for swimming, but the days are long and warm, and it's perfect weather for getting around the island by bike. One thing to know: many Formentera hotels are seasonal, opening between late April and May, so check opening dates for your exact week.
The island is small, so where you stay is mostly about the vibe you want: Sant Francesc, the little capital in the middle; Es Pujols, the liveliest beach town; or the long, quiet Migjorn beach on the south coast. Here are the best places to stay.
Best Location: Hotel Es Marès, Sant Francesc
Sant Francesc Xavier is the island's small capital, right in the middle, a short drive from the ferry port at La Savina and within easy cycling distance of most beaches. Hotel Es Marès is its finca-style boutique hotel, with a spa, a pool and a Mediterranean restaurant.
It's adults-only, so it's for couples and grown-up trips. Being in town means you can walk to dinner on the square, and still be on any beach on the island in minutes.

Best Value: Hotel Voramar, Es Pujols
Formentera is not a cheap island, so value here means a simple, well-run hotel in a good spot. Hotel Voramar in Es Pujols is one of the more affordable options, with family rooms for up to five and the beach and the town's restaurants a short walk away.
Es Pujols is the island's liveliest town in summer, but in May it's relaxed. It's also close to the salt flats and the start of the path out to Ses Illetes.
Best for Families: Insotel Club Maryland, Migjorn
Insotel Club Maryland sits next to Migjorn beach on the south coast and is built for families: kids' clubs split by age, children's pools, a splash park with slides, and bungalow apartments with a separate bedroom and a kitchenette.
Migjorn is a long, quieter beach with shallow, clear water in places, and the resort means kids have plenty to do between beach sessions. Check that the kids' club is running on your May dates, since programs ramp up toward summer.
Luxury: Gecko Hotel & Beach Club, Migjorn
Gecko is Formentera's barefoot-luxury classic: about 30 rooms right on Migjorn beach at Ca Marí, with an outdoor pool, a spa, daily yoga, a beach bar and a healthy restaurant.
It's the place for slow days: swim, read, eat well, repeat. In May you get it before the high-summer rates and the waiting lists for sunbeds.
Most Unique: Can Tres, Ca Marí
Can Tres is a tiny, bohemian boutique hideaway near Migjorn beach, with only a handful of rooms and apartments set in gardens, and bikes to rent right there.
It feels like staying at a friend's island house rather than a hotel, which is exactly the Formentera spirit. Book early, because there's very little room.
