What to Do in Formentera: Spain's Quietest Island at Its Best in May
Updated: Oct 4
Formentera is the simplest argument for May in Spain: the water is warm enough to swim (21–22°C), the beach is empty, and the island — 20 kilometres long, flat as a salt pan, with water that genuinely reads as Caribbean from a distance — is yours. In July and August the same island is overwhelmed. In May it's one of the most beautiful and most peaceful places in the Mediterranean.
The ferry from Ibiza takes 30 minutes. Formentera has one main village (Sant Francesc Xavier), one road running the length of the island, one old lighthouse at La Mola, and several of the finest beaches in Spain. That's approximately the full inventory. It's perfect.
Best for First-Timers: Ses Illetes Beach & Espalmador Sand Bar
Ses Illetes is consistently named among the top ten beaches in Europe and occasionally the top five in the world. A narrow spit of sand on the north end of Formentera, with shallow turquoise water on both sides, it's the reason the island has the reputation it has. In May you arrive, put your towel down, and have approximately this experience uninterrupted. In August you pay €40 to park, queue for a sunbed, and share the view with 2,000 people.
The boat trip from La Savina port to Ses Illetes and the tiny uninhabited island of Espalmador (with its natural mud baths in the interior) takes about 30 minutes and is the right format for a first visit — you see the island from the water, which shows you the colour properly.

Best for Families & Kids: Cycling the Island — La Savina to La Mola
Formentera is flat and small enough that the entire island is cycleable in a day — the main road runs 20 kilometres from La Savina (the ferry port) to La Mola lighthouse at the eastern end. The route passes through Sant Francesc, the salt pans (flamingos present from spring through autumn), the pine woods above Migjorn beach, and the high plateau of La Mola where the lighthouse sits above 180-metre cliffs with views over Ibiza, Mallorca, and on clear days the Valencian coast.
Electric bikes available at La Savina make it accessible for families with children or anyone who wants the views without committing to a serious ride. Several operators rent bikes and e-bikes at the port. A guided cycling tour adds the ecology of the salt pans and the endemic lizard (the Formentera lizard, a distinct subspecies) that you'd otherwise miss.

Best if You Only Have a Few Hours: Kayaking the North Coast — Sea Caves & Coves
The north coast of Formentera between Ses Illetes and Cap de Barbaria has a series of sea caves and coves accessible only by kayak or boat — small openings in the limestone that lead to chambers inside the cliff, clear water above white sand floors, and in May the light refraction through the cave entrances produces the colour effects that make the Balearic caves famous. A morning kayak tour from La Savina covers 4–5 caves in 3 hours at a comfortable pace.

Most Unique: Sunset at La Mola Lighthouse — End of the World
The La Mola lighthouse sits at the eastern tip of Formentera on a 180-metre cliff — it was referenced by Jules Verne in Hector Servadac as the end of the known Mediterranean world. The sunset from the cliff is one of the classic Balearic experiences: the light hits the sea from directly behind the island, the shadow of Formentera extends eastward across the water, and on a clear May evening you can watch the sun drop behind the red cliffs of Ibiza to the west.
The La Mola market runs on Wednesday and Sunday evenings near the lighthouse — artisan stalls, local musicians, and the sunset. May is the right month: the market is running, the tourists haven't overwhelmed it, and the temperature at dusk on the plateau is comfortable without the summer heat.

Best Guided Experience: Formentera Full Day from Ibiza — Ferry, Bike & Beach
The Formentera day trip from Ibiza is one of the most efficiently satisfying days in the Balearics: 30-minute ferry crossing, bike hire at La Savina, cycle to Ses Illetes for the morning, lunch at a chiringuito above the sand, afternoon at Migjorn beach, back to the port for the evening ferry. The guided format adds stops at the salt pans, the endemic lizard habitat, and La Mola — but honest answer, Formentera is one of those places where the independent day trip works perfectly if you know the ferry schedule.

Looking for Somewhere to Stay?
Sant Francesc Xavier (the main village) and Es Pujols (the small resort town on the north coast) are the accommodation centres. La Savina has a handful of harbour-facing options. For May specifically, book 2–3 months ahead — capacity is limited and the island fills up for long weekends. Browse hotels in Formentera →
